The Backyard Pool: Enjoy It Safely

Over six million Americans provide fun and relaxation for their families, friends and neighbors each summer in their backyard pools. Unfortunately, pool accidents also bring tragedy each year through drowning or spinal cord injury. More than half of the roughly 700 pool fatalities each year occur in backyard pools, and an additional 500 people suffer spinal cord injuries from diving accident., states Sam Hall, water safety chairman of the county

chapter. American Red Cross. Almost 70 percent of the home pool deaths are children ages 1 to 10. and the most frequent victims are 2-year-olds The real tragedy is that many pool deaths could have been avoided had safety precautions been understood and followed. RED CROSS recom mends the following safety precautions for backyard pool owner's to help safeguard their family and friends while enjoying summer activities in and

around the pool : Take a Red Cross first aid or water safetv course and learn artificial respiration. Teach it to your.., children, it is too late to - learn when you have a victim on your hands, and the first few minutes before professional medical help arrives could mean the difference between life and death. Enclose your pool with a fence at least four feet high and with a gate that is locked when there is no adult around to supervise swirrtmers. Keep handy a ring buoy with a line attached. Throw this to anyone in trouble or extend a pole, long enough to reach the middle of your pool. Never jump in to save someone unless you are trained in lifesaving. PUT NONSLIP paint or other nonslip material around your pool and on the diving board, and keep it in repair. Use plastic or paper cups for drinks at poolsides. Cover the pool for any long period when it is not in use, as while you are on vacation. Make sure all family members can swim. Small children who are nonswimmers or poor swimmers should wear life jackets at all times. Install waterproof electrical outlets sufficiently far back from the pool so that swimmers will not " come into contact with them. Run wires for pool underground. Never swim alone, and never swim when tired or chilled. FORBID RUNNING or roughhousing at poolside. and dunking in the pool Post signs to enforce no diving from shallow end. No back dives from diving board, no swimming under the diving board, etc. Have a phone located near the pool. Post emergency instructions and telephone numbers conspicuously. Have an adequate first aid kit available. Make sure there is adequate filtration to maintain good clarity of the water Consult the health depart ment for regulations on pool sanitation. Clearly mark the deep and+shallow sections Separate the deep and shallow water by using a buoyed line when weak swimmers or nonswimmers are using the pool Drinking and swimming, as with drinking and driv ing, don't mix. i Slides can be dangerous . ! allow feet first entrance only. No diving* in aboveground pools. Finally, since accidents do happen, check your insurance agent to make sure of liability coverage under your homeowner's policy.
