Allergies will be our timely topic for the next few articles. " has been estimated that 35 million Americans have at least one allergy. Many locals claim that New Jersey has its own special array of allergies. To understand what an allergy is, we need to talk about the "Immune system." ThfiT is our bodies' mechanism for repelling disease. The form of protection whereby your white blood cells produce "antibodies". Antibodies are very specialized. They counteract only the particular substance for which they are- programmed. Usually this is to our benefit, for example, when we get a flu shot, we develop antibodies which will then help prevent the flu. It is a peculiar flaw of humans that we can develop antibodies to substances which normally can't harm us. The antibodies cause our body to have a "histamine reaction." This generally feels to us like runny no6e, itchy skin, rash and even wheezing. Via this reaction the body tries to wash out the allergen or foreign substance by secreting extra fluid.' People commonly take "antihistamines" to reverse this reaction when they are having an allergy attack. WHILE MOST ALLERGIC reactions are mild, there are also ' *
serious, even life- - threatening forms. "Anaphylaxis" is the extreme form of a reaction involving fluid accumulation in the lungs, severe hives i and great difficulty | breathing. This requires j emergency treatment. Oc- .< curing occasionally with fodd, plant, or animal allergens, this is most common with drugs, particularly penicillin and sulfa. ■ Patients often ask why I they are now allergic to a I substance to which they I
have been previously exposed. For example, they get a dog for their daughter She cares for it
without any problem for a month, and then suddenly begins to show an allergy This may be the normal
pattern for developing an allergy This is because in order to have an allergic reaction, your body must first have the opportunity to develop antibodies to the substance, in this case the month-long exposure to the
dog. Next week: Allergies, Types, Detection and Treatment. Health Watch is a public education project of the county unit of the State Division of the American Cancer Society Dr Beit man is president -elect
