MR. MOM (Vestron) "PG" — the premise of thi^ comedy harks back to the days of those simple, yet delightful Doris Day/Rock Hudson films. Michael Keaton plays a husband who is laid off from his job and becomes a househusband to his three children when mom <Teri Gam goes to work The role reversals result in lots of obvious jokes that Keaton and Garr save . through their enormous amount of talent
There are a few slowmoments and it would have been nice if supporting actor Martin Mull s role could have been enlarged But. all in all. Mr. Mom is a funny film that the whole family will be able to enjoy THE HAND < Warner i "R" — despite the fact this stars the respected actor Michael Caine. The Hand is a silly picture that's not very scary. Caine plays a cartoonist who loses his hand in a car accident. While his life falls apart because he can't dravC- anymore, the hand lives on and kills those who geUin Caine's way. Trie Hand might have wonted if the screenplaycould have built up the camp humor angle or if it had been more frightening. As it is, The Hand is a stupid film that won't even win over hardcore horror fans. RIO BRAVO (Warner) "NR" — one of the finest westerns ever filmed. Directed by the legendary Howard Hawks. Rio Bravo is a tale of a sheriff (John Wayne) who arrests a murderer who obviously has a lot of friends. Wayne has to fight off the gunmen who try to free the murderer. Dean Martin is excellent as the deputy who is battling a drinking problem and Wayne is at his best. Hawks took a simple story and enhanced the tension, personal problems, and claustrophobic at- ' mosphere to create a stunning movie. While Wayne and his small group of deputies fight off the gunmen, one is overwhelmed by the small confines of the jailhouse Rio Bravo is one of the fewwesterns to have aged well' THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE 'Thom/EMD "NR" - if your idea of a science fiction film is a collection of I special effects, this 1962 British film might seem a bit tame But, if you like a well-written story with excellent acting. then this will surely please yotr The superpowers have
been testing nuclear bombs and have knocked the Earth off its orbit, it's now heading directly for the sun. The story is uncovered and seen through the eyes of a London newspaper The acting is wonder ful— especially Edward Judd in the leadiiTg role
it Unfortunately, the issues that are dealt with in The Day The Earth Caught Fire I are still poignant. Don't miss this little gem. CAVEMAN . (CBS/Fox) "PG" — this comedy stars Ringo Starr. Shelley Long, and Barbara Bach. While it does provide a few chuckles, it never really grabs the viewer. Some of the gags in this prehistoric setting indicate Caveman could've been a lot more successful.
