Wests Edges East, 20-4

Bv FASTBALL ZKL.MK AVALON — Bad breaks, haphazard officiating, and a menagerie of unsport smanlike conduct by its opponents cost the East Side (of Dune Drive) a narrowChamber of Commerce softball game Sunday. The score was about 20 to about 4. 1 The difference, it should be noted, was less than the 23-3 point spread by which the Stars topped the Wranglers for the U.S. Football League champion ship the same day. To this unbiased reporter, who pitched three innings for the East Side without a cap and gave up about 20 sleazy runs, the East Side showed a superior command of the fundamentals of the game and outstanding sportsmanship. The winning West Side. | on the other hand, employed numerous unfair tactics in its razor-thin vicI tory. including using players with muscles. At one point a West Side batter actually slid head first into home plate, a clear violation of the rules under which the contest was to have been played. Although the West Side did exhibit superior pitching. better fielding and more heads-up baserunning. and despite the unofficial 20-4 score based on runners crossing the plate, a poll of spectators after the game made the East Side the sentimental

favorite. A list of all the players would be impossible since many wandered in and out of the lineup at will. The entire affair was choreographed by Miriam Kauterman who. in a man ner reminiscent of the late Gen. George Patton. told players where to play, when »o bai. when to run. etc. She also forgot to distribute chamber teeshirts. the bribe that at tracted most of the participants.
