outdoors wtthlou Rodia *s Exotics Are Within Range For Most Anglers
Best bets for Jersey Cape anglers would have to be fluke and bluefish. But what makes Cape May County such a great place , to fish is the variety. There is an excitement which attaches to fishing here for the best part of a lifetime Given t h^ time, the . wherewithalr and the inclination. anglers can fish 'for the exotics— the white and blue marlin. the tunas and albacores. wahoo. dolphin, and a hatful ofs other exotics such as \ *» Spanish and King . mackerel, a sailfish or two. and other semi or tropical i fish which wander into the area. ",vu lira UCIWCCII UIC
While ita»»jikes con siderable m off ay to actively pursue the exotic game fish, i|i is a reasonable reality that some of the above wander into areas where the bluefish fleet is operating. While it takes a little more than a small runabout to get to the bluefish grounds, today's outboards are more reliable and the boats are much sturdier and more seaworthy, so offshore trolling for bluefish is within the pocketbook range of a lot more anglers. Bluefish. bonito. albacore. and occasional exotics take lures in the inshore water which lies between the
i shoreline and the areas ?- where #ie hot exotic fishing e starts. e It is here that the e average income angler s gets a real shot at catching s fish without investing a a small fortune. II One of the best entertaine ment buys in the world is s the cost of chartering a sixb man boat to go off into the ? ocean or Delaware Bay. b When the charter costs are b divided between the s anglers < usually four to six c buddies who get together for a day of fishing) the cost is not too bad. J When one fishes on a four * hour, six hour, all day /boat ■ or takes a night chumming trip to fish for blues, the cost factor gets much better. It is all the more apparent just how much value there is in a party boat fare when one compares it with an amuse- | ment ride on any Broadwalk. The latest thrill ride on the broadwajk is a fewminutes of high adventure, but it comes in at around $1.75. An all day trip on a party boat costs less than that for a whole HOUR of fishing. And the skipper has to provide bait as weil. And when one looks at the cost of renting a boat in the inland waterway for a day's outing for crabbing and/oj- fishing, it becomes an even better bargain. If one prices a boat rental from any one of the local liveries and divides that up between two to five anglers, it is a whopping bargain for a day of fun and fellowship on the water When one recognizes all that is offered on charter, party or boat rental accommodations. it is one of the best entertainment buys of all times. What makes it all the more appealing is #that which ever your choice, you get a few hours of
recreation and you might even catch a few fish. i We had to purchase some fish for a barbecue and cookout recently Time precluded going out to catch the fish, and while we can't fault the supplier who gave us 15 pounds of beautiful filets for $38. we sure would have much rather invested the $38 in fishing trips and caught our own filets No matter how you look at it, fishing is a great way to spend free time Within reason, the cost of a fishing trip should never be weighed against how many fish you catch Rather it should be measured by how good a time you had. GOOD NEWS: We got a
call from George Dunham at Dad's place on (Grassy) Sound in North Wildwood George said the boat livery is back in operation. Much of the damage from the spring storms has been corrected and new boats and motors have been added to the rental fleet. A temporary bait house has been set up; the pier is back and the floating docks are in place All of this is in time for Dad's Place devotees to enjoy some excellent fluke fishing. And for those who have the willingness to put in the times there are weakfish to be caught The better weakfish anglers are boating 10 to 12 weakies. Boats fishing the inland waterway around Grassy Sound are catching 20 to 30 fluke with some throw-backs. Fluke have been weighed in up to five pounds from Dad's Place. Randy Opie of Philadelphia brought in eight keepers up to five pounds. He threw back a lot of small fluke. Further north at Strathmere, Candy at Frank's Boats is also reporting excellent inland waterway action. The women are bagging some big ones there. Marie Flagg of Philadelphia weighed in a 4'2 pounder She and Milt Sokolowski of Philadelphia had -34 keepers between them Mae Uttard and Shirley Mover of Allentown caught 25 fluke. Tony Diluzio of Colwyn. Pa brought in 16 nice fluke FLUKE TOURNAMENT, South Jersey Fishing and Hunting Center is sponsoring its 2nd Annual Fluke Tournament Fishing hours are from 8 a.m. Saturday.
