Cape Brothers Are Stars in Carolina
AVALON - R.J and Peter Soens of this borough and Hilton Head Island. S C . both students at Sea Pines Academy, this year led their varsity team to the school's best basketball record ever — 20 wins and nine losses. Playing in the top prep school division, the brothers, sons of Roger and Gail Soens. took their team to within one victory of the state championship round. Peter, who is 15 years old and was conference MVP last season as a junior varsity player, has a streak of 10 straight tournaments MVP. In this year's Savannah. Georgia. Holiday Classic, he was also the recipient of the sportmanship award as well as being chosen for the all tournament team. UK WAS an unanimous choice first team all con ference guard and was named as a player in the South Carolina school Boys All Star Game. As a cocaptain and starter Peter helped lead his team to a victory in this classic. In May. 1983. Peter, as a sophomore, was honored as the team's MVP and received a separate award recognizing his three records during the past season (highest single game point total of 46; highest season scoring average of 20.3 and highest season point total of 588 > R.J. who was a first team all conference center last year on the junior varsity team, was this year's third leading scorer while play- < ing guard for the varsity, i
R.J. was chosen for the All Tournament Team in the Savannah Holiday Classic in which Sea Pines came in second out of 12 teamVDl RING JULY/ and August. Both R.J. and Peter started their junior year at Sea Pines Academy by making the Dean's Honors list for the first trimester They then led their young team to a 16-10 record and a third place finish in the top level prep school conference. Peter continued to lead the team in almost every category and become the all time leading scorer for , Sea Pines Academy. His two-year varisty point total is 1125 averaging 20.5 points per game Peter added to this unbroken string of trounament awards by being named to the all tour nament teams in the Sea Pines Academy Mid Winter Tournament and the Beaufort Heart Fund Tournament. in which he was. the tourney's leading scorer. The Gators lost py only one point to the number one ranked team in
the state. PETKR WAS again named to the All Conference first team and on March 17. 1984. H$ captained the South All Stars to a sixpoint win over the North All Stars. He was the leading scorer in' this game with 16 points. Peter has -again participated" in the
"Nothing Could Be Finer'' clinic. He will attend the B-C Invitational Camp in June. R.J. was the team's second leading scorer, averaging 12 points per game, and was a strong rebounder. He was named to the second team All Conference squad.
