Don't forget the Fashion Show Quintfssence of Stone Harbor at 9820 3rd Ave. is putting on for the S.H. Women's Club July 31 at the Wildwood Country Club. Marguerite Klotz/bucher is in charge of reservations (call 368-4369), Jane Boss is 1 picking the most < glamorous models, Midge McMullen is in charge of door prizes, a basket of !
cheer is being assembled by Jean Christie and Jane Owings. As she has for years, Marie Spence will wrap the many door prizes; Sallie Ruth McCorkle will do the commentary. Music will be supplied by Ray deLaurentis and chairing the show this year are Mary Conwell and Peg Schaffer. Island fantasy Fashion Show, co-sponsored by the Avalon Garden Club and Recreation Dept. with Jane Kirwan of Sheik's as fashion coordinator will take place 8 p.m. Friday, July 27, in Avalon Community Hall. No reservations are necessary but it's only day after tomorrow, ^o don't forget. « • • Ruthie and Ernest Blair have just let us know that the Annua] Arts and Crafts Shows are right on schedule. The Crafts Show is completely sold out and only 16 frames inside the tent are still available for the Art Show. The Art Show is Aug. 4 and the Crafts Show is Aug. 5 under the big colorful tent at the beach and 80th Street. The shows rim from 8 a.m. 'til 5 p.m. both days. They are sponsored by the borough and artists from 1 1 states are displaying their work on Aug. 4 (108 of them) and more than 60 Jnt±nL\
crafts from 15 states will be on view Aug. 5. JUDGES WILL be of the highest caliber. Constantine Kermes, who recently returned from Paris, where he had a two-week showing, is from Lancaster, Pa. and owns his studio there. Hubert Fitzgerald is also from Lancaster and has participated in many shows nationwide. Perhaps because Ruth and Ernie have been able to attract such respected judges the Art Show has been chosen as one of four shows this year to award the "Cape May County Cultural and Heritage Commission Purchase Award" in the amount of $250. Nine hundred dollars in prizes will be awarded overall. All participants have been notified, months ago, of places to call for advance reservations in motels while they are here (a large majority make this part of their vacation ) and restaurants should be crowded, so make your plans accordingly. This is really a big weekend for Stone Harbor — two fascinating shows for which no admission is charged and countless numbers of people from faraway places to see them. Caveat: go early to avoid the biggest crowds and afternoon sun Even if you can't go early be sure to make it (or themi for real collectors' items PIANO VIRTUOSO Peter Orth's career rocketed into orbit at age 15 when he won the Youth Competition of the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Academy of Music in Phila. and was invited to play as guest soloist in a regular concert. The following spring Peter was the featured soloist at the Academy's 12th Anniversary and Ball. Unless you've attended one of these Anniversary Concerts you can't imagine how white tie those evenings can be or the calibre of artists chosen to star in them. Peter has been guest soloist with most of the celebrated orchestras on the East and West Coasts as well as the Midwest He appeared at the Wilmington, Del , Grand Opera only last year. Still in his early 20s, he was termed by the San Francisco Chronicle ". . a superstar pianist in the making " He is a protege of the famed Rudolf Serkin and was first-prize winner of the 1979 Walter W. Naumburg International Competition. The New York Times had this to say of him when he played in Carnegie Hall, that be ". . gave every indication of being a major talent."
He will be appearing here Thursday, Aug. 16, 8:15 R.m. at the Wetlands Institute on Stone Harbor Blvd. Clearly this is an evening for true music lovers. Following the recital there will be a champagne reception to meet the artist given by our own Dolly Moore, his mother. Tickets may be obtained at Marabello's Restaurant, 9426 3rd Ave., Sandpiper Art Galerig$ 10829 3rd Ave., and Apropos Boutique, 2819 Dune Drive. For further information call: 967-7667. PEOPLE HAVE asked Garden Club President Nancy Ritchie how much tne new bridge island was going to cost the taxpayers This is very upsetting to the hard-working members of the club. Truth- is: The Garden Club in Stone Harbor has an endowment Fund to which individuals and organizations may contribute in memory or celebration of their friends and relatives. This money is used for permanent plantings of trees and shrubs on all the islands on Second Avenue and the new Bridge Island. A record uf these contributions is maintained in a permanent laminated ledger Kamona Wilson is in charge of this project and if you want further information you may phone her at 368-3401 Maintenance of these plantings is the respon sibility of the Garden Club and planting of all annuals on islands from 80th to 1 1 1th Streets was done with the club's own money and by members in a three-day stint* in May This year 11,000 plants were emplaced under the leadership of Marsha Boyer and ' that ain't easy' She'll be in charge again next year, so call her at 368-6351 if vou have any questions IT WAS A miserable, sultry day when we dropped off our copy at the Herald last week and we hadn't seen our buddy Mac McConnell, combination professor and mixicolOgist, for some time. We made our first but far from our last visit to the Bellevue Tavern in the middle of Cape May Court House on -Rte. 9 If you have a big appetite or only a big thirst this is the spot for you. It's the closest thing we've seen to a typical British pub in this country. Most of the patrons were obivously regulars and as outsiders we weren't made to feel like newcomers. The sandwiches were out of this world when it came to both size and quality. Your reporter had a liver- | wurst and onion and her | (Page 24 Please)
