Dear Ruth: I am 40 pounds overweight ( I gained 20 pounds this" past winter) and I can't seem to stick to a diet. I like sweets very much and tell myself that one or two cookies won't make much difference. Also, I have had a back problem all my life and now I am suffering with tendinitis in my knee. I am short of breath. Depressed. Dear D: As the yearsx pass and our bodies show signs of wear, we should^ not expect them to perform 1 v like this year's model. But if we take care of our
bodies by eating what we SHOULD, not what we WANT, and by being physically active, these marvelous machines will respond and we will enjoy life even into old age. If our automobile needs a new set of brakes, it won't help to ignore that problem and get a new paint job instead. The^car may look nicer, but itwbn't function any betjter. ) So too, we miist deal ra- , tionaUy yvith our human JVfjhjems.t If extra weight is cffoqg stress to an , already existing back prdblem then, dn your case, one or two cookies indeed make a difference! ^ If you ingest them, you're adding to file problem. If you do not, you will begin to alleviate the problem. Obesity is a progressive disease. Just as we begin to accept 20 extra pounds, 30 appear. And we continue to add more until the day we hit "rock bottom" — when we acknowledge that we have a problem and humbly and sincerely seek help. If we happen to be teenagers the problem is much more easily resolved. Tennis, aerobics or even dancing will burn up the calories. But as we get older we find our weight problems are composed, especially as in yQur case, when other health problems such as bad back and tendinitis are present, making it difficult, if not impossible, to exercise. I would recommend that
you start by checking with your doctor and have a complete physical examination before you start any weight loss program He will advise you as to the kind and amount of exercise that is safe for you. Learn your body's limits and don't exceed them. Ask him to suggest a proper diet. He may prescribe vitamins or minerals if you need them. Even though our goal is to be physically fit and to rely on doctors as little as possible, adults } should start out with a doctor's approval. Then be patient. It took a while to add that extra weight, you can be sure it is not going to disappear overnight. Next, keep a pad handy in your kitchen and write down everything you eat (even one or two pookies ) . Adapt the diet plan to your lifestyle. Then START. We humans tend to procrastinate, but there will never be a better time to start than TODAY! Make up your mind that you can do it and you will. In addition to your diet discipline, start with your new exercise program Remember that it's never too late. A Duke University study showed that even older people can reverse a weak physique to some extent. Walking on a regular basis is an excellent antidote for depression. Try it. And let me hear from you in a few months. If you need help getting started on a diet program, write to Ruth Alcorn Wanberg. c/o The Cape May County Herald, Box 430, Cape May Court House.
