on the mark by Mark Mattern 1 Osborn Shows His Class in All-State Games
* Speed, power and consistent batting stroke. That sums up the abilities of former Wildwood High baseball standout Bill Osborn. Osborn used all three of his skils to lead
South Jersey to a sweep over North Jersey in the Garden State Baseball Classic held recently at Rutgers University. Osborn, who will be a freshman at Pitt Universi-
ty this fall, went 3 for 4 as the South captured 5-3 a ad 9-8 victories. In the second game. Qsborn led off the fifth inning with a towering drive over the 380-foot sign in deep left for a home run. Osborn scored five of the South s 14 runs and stole three bases. JUST A FEW weeks ago Osborn started at quarterback for a South Jersey football team in the Getty Bowl. After notching starting roles in both the football and baseball all-star games for the entire state of New Jersey, it is fairly safe to say Osborn ranks as one of the top athletes in the Garden State. The first-ever Cape May County Lifeguard competition went off without a hitch. Now, that is tough to do when putting together any new sporting event. Lengths of the events were shortened just a bit for the new event and that didn't seem to bother the Ocean City Lifeguard team. Led by the crew team of Ron Kirk and Tom Stephanik. Ocean City compiled 17 points to win the event by three over host Wildwood Crest. Other winners included
Tom Quarry of Wildwood in the quarter-mile swim, Tom Fitzpatrick of Sea Isle in the two-mile run. and North Wildwood's Tom Palmer in the singles row. Wildwood Crest took the 75-yard surf dash in just over three minutes. OVERCOMING choppy seas and cold temperatures, the 1976 South Jersey swimming champion returned to his winning form recently to capture Wildwood's mile swim. Former Ocean City lifeguard Kurt Sulzer edged defending champ Doug Meyers by five seconds to win the event. Meyers is a member of the Avalon Lifeguards. Following Meyers were teammate Doug Mecklenburg in third and Tom Quarry of Wildwood, fourth. In the team standings, Avalon Beach Patrol took first with 108 points and Wildwood nailed down second with 156 points. Pam Phillips of Princeton was the top female finisher, coming in 15th overall. IN SWIMMING competition for the youngsters. Ocean City looked very impressive in its first meet The O.C. Community Center squad took care of Trident by a 430-107 score. It seems pitching, or the lack of it, is the story of the Atlantic County Baseball League Case in point. Ocean City against Margate. In the doubleheader. Ocean City scored 17 runs and lost both contests. Margate put together 31 hits in taking 12-9 and 16-8 victories. In the opener. Margate scored in every inning for the easy win Bob Meis led O.C . going 2 for 3. Home runs ruled th« nightcap as eight round rippers were hit. Connec ting for Ocean City were" Rich Rhinesmith. Pnte^--Thomas and Matt Dice. Ocean City fell to 7 and 15 on the season following the twin bill loss. REMARKS: Speaking of home runs, it's nice to see Mike Schmidt finally getting his dinger stroke back Schmidt can cqrry the Phillies if he gets hot and it looks as if the time is now.
i The Phils will soon face a problem of fitting John ; Denny back into the star1 ting rotation. Who will get i the walk to the bullpen? Also returning soon will > be Bo Diaz and Len Matuzek. I think the Phils will make a trade soon 'to get either a shortstop or ' long reliever for one of I these players. The way 1 Tim Corcoran and Ozzie [ Virgil are playing there » just isn't enough room on > the roster for all. : WITH THE U.S.F.L. championship in his pocket now, Philadelphia coach Jim Mora says that his [ Stars could "survive" in » the N.F.L. Even though i they are the class of the i spring league, the Stars would be a .500 team in the senior circuit. Get your tickets now for i the Philadelphia Eagles. As soon as Ron Jaworski starts unloading bombs to Mike Quick and Kenny Jackson the seats will fill I up fast. Let's hope Jaws somehow gets the time to i throw. ; The Men's Olympic basketball team has me a
bit worried. I know that they have a better than average chance to win the gold, but too much has been made of the match ups between the Olympians and N.B.A. all-stars. First of all, the N.B.A. teams are thrown together with players who haven't played for a couple of months, They have no team work and don't know enough about international rules to use them well. The teams that will be in Los Angeles wilt be as well coached as thd^U.S. Bobby Knigh^ may be a good .coach btit somehow people believe he is the only coaclTin the world. He's not.
