A good way to experiencp a ghost crab's view of the world is to spread your towel early one summer morning where the dunes meet the beach. Rest with your chin in the sand and imagine yourself relaxing in the shady, cool entrance of a tunnel which. extends 3-4 feet down into the sand. Now, all you do is watch that nothing large (like a'human beachcomber) crushes your tunnel. You wait, too, for the tide to rise and wash in your dinner ! As you ponder, the subject of your imaginings just might scurry by on the tips of its eight pointed legs, leaving crisscrossed tracks in the sand. As the sun rises, and heat waves distort the horizon, the ghost crabs disappear into their burrows to await the cool of night. "Not a bad deal," you may well exclaim, "to spend all summer on the beach."

Notice, however, that the crabs failed to cool off with a swim in the surf. That is because these most terrestrial of crabs rarely enter the water except to periodically moisten their jgills.or eggs. Ghost crabsJaJso called sand crabs) are not large — their gray and mottled, square-shaped caVapace is generally not over three inches wide. They are so called because they can so quickly disappear down their burrows or hide by flattening just under the sand where they are perfectly camouflaged by their pale color. They remain hidden during the. heat of the day, which may explain why you rarely have seen one. Look closely, they are there, sharing the beach with you.
