I NINETY-TWO GUESTS arrived at the S.H. Women's Club Sunday, July 15, for Sara Brady's Surprise Birthday Party. It was all very cleverly arranged. Two months before. Bill Klotzbucher arrived with an invitation for a party he and Marguerite were supposed to be giving on July 15. After he left Sara said to her daughter Pat. "Has that Marguerite gone out of her mind?£an you imagine anybody giving a luncheon on Sunday in the middle of July?" Pat coolly answered. "Oh well, if it's too hot you can always leave early." Meanwhile Matt* Woolerv was going to all Sara's friends and asking for dollar bills which she scotched taped together end-to-end, wound in a huge wheel, and packed in a pretty box with instructions to remove the decorative bow and pull for a surprise. Meanwhile, on July 14, 10 members of Sara's family ■ were asked to come down j for the weekend from I Philadelphia and threw a gorgeous party for her complete with presents and a decorated cake. They had a grand time and Sara thought it was great that people had come so far to be with her on her special day. particularly her three | grandsons — Paul. Stephen f and John, the youngest. ON SUNDAY, she I thought happily of the | evening before when they $ planned such a nice g celebration for her. watch- ij ed her family take off for | different spots, watched the boys dressed up to visit |j Aunt Edith and waited for j Betty White to drive her to V Klotzbuchers' party — £ grateful that they had a * nice cool day for it j j At 2 : 30 promptly thPy ar rived at the Civic Club ; mentioning that it must be going to be a huge affair because of the large : number of parked cars : They entered the club and Sara almost fell down when she heard all the guesLs singing "Happy Birthday" to her She was taken up to the stage, where Harry Strohmetz was doing the emceeing Her first gift was a magnificent basket of flowers sent by the S.H. Seniors Then a series of gifts was opened from friends and relatives f Finally Harry chose the at - tractive box wrapped by Matt Woolery. As in- \ structed. he removed the ? bow. handed it to Sara, and said "Now pull, it says I you'll get a surprise Everyone's eyes bugged out as Sara began to pull
out a trail of bills as long as a football field. Harry helped her drape it on hefself as a stole which wound around her many times over. Lots of the gals were heard to say. "I'll take that over mink any day." Little John was excited beyond belief and jumped up and down saying "Grandma. Grandma you've got more than a hundred dollars!" Several offers came from 'he audience to drive Sara home but Betty White shouted firmly. "I brought her and I'm taking her home!" It just had to be one of the greatest parties ever. Claire and John Howard of 8410 3rd Ave. have raised a completely Stone Harbororiented family. According to Claire, when we congratulated her on putting - three youngsters through
college these days, the kids took summer jobs down here and have worked each year they've been old enough to. | Tina, who is going to Washington College in Chestertown. Md., has ; worked here each summer for as long as anyone can I remember ; Mimi t graduated from Getj tysburg College, Pa , and Is | working in the nation's capitol; John III brought . the whole subject up. | A familiar face in this I metropolis. John has just graduated from Cornell's I School of Hotel Administrav tion. This is. almost unquestionably, the finest * source of guidance in this \ career in the country John was guaranteed he would have at least one offer for his services if he graduated — he fooled em and had four offers immediately John served as a lifeguard down here for several summers, then worked as a waiter in many local restaurants including helping in management at Vogel's and serving as maitre de at the Whitebrier for the past year We don't know how many of you know it (we didn't 1 but McDonald's Family : Restaurant has been bought out by a British t firm, the Plaza Hotel . Group, which is now developing its own chain, , and John III will be in charge of their new venture on Lake Buena Vista adjacent to Disney World. When asked where he'd spend his vacation next summer. John answered. "Probably 1 right here and working in a I restuarant as always." | At it's last meeting the Zoning Board of Adjust-
ment granted St. Mary's Episcopal Church a variance to construct a long-needed narthex, or in secular terms vestibule, to extend out to 95th Street to shield parishoners and of course brides from inclement weather while they wart to enter the church. It also will prevent blasts of cold wind chilling seated parisbieeers during ser. vices in the winter. NEWS NOTES: One of the nicest things about writing this column is that our readers are so responsive to our requests and people we barely knowwill sometimes be so enthusiastic about a place they've seen or restaurant they've tried they call and ask us to review it. That was the case6when Nancy (Mrs. Dr. Wayne) Stewart of 81st and Dyne
Drive called to ask if we had eaten recently af the Heron's Nest in the Concord Motor Inn at 78th and Dune Drive. We 'replied that we had noUand she said "Oh, you must.TCs the best food on th£ywhole island!" Haven't had a chanee yet, but it will be the next eatery, we try out. THE AUDITORIUM of Stone Harbor's school was transformed into a ground court July 20 with a raised runway leading to the throne. Last year's Queen, Maureen NcNulty. wa§ seated on the throne wearing her crown as 10 young contestants with astonishing poise descended two steps and walked the runway like profes- ^ sional moodels, returned and answered one question from emcee Councilman R. Jack Fitzpatrick. We sat directly behind the judges, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Clydesdale of Lower Township. Mayor Rachel Sloan of Avalon. Mrs. Joseph Moretz of Wildwood (Page 23 Please)
