Ocean City Odors Spur Action
SWAINTON - The County MUA has authorized additional funds for the Ocean City waste-water treatment facilities in an effort to find a solution to the odor problems that have periodically plagued the system. ) Camp/ Dresser and McKe£, consulting «ngineeis. were directed to reevaluate the Ocean City operation and to report back to the board its findings. VI I A C H A I H VI A N William Bapd said if the findings demonstrate a problem in /design, the authority should assess a claim against PQA Engineering Co., the authority's former engineering consultants who designed the Ocean City and Cape May facilities. After experiencing significant odor problems during the initial year of operation, in 1983 the MUA added an odor control system at the 46th Street treatment plant and also at the «8rd and 32nd Street pumping stations. During recent weeks a new wave of complaints has been received regar ding the reoccurance of odors emanating from the wastewater treatment facility, prompting the city council of Ocean City to threaten to bring suit against the authority W E II A V E long acknowledged there are odor problems and we have been frustrated in our efforts to totally resolve them." George Marinakis said. MUA commissioner Roy Gillian, who lives in Ocean City, and has often been critical of' the wastewater system's design and performance. said recently. "It's not Ocean City's fault and they don't deserve it. We must 'do something positive and tangible now." Gillian urged the MUA to approve the installation of "stop-gap" piping to help vent any odors from the sludge storage tanks The engineers were authorized to beg jrty* works immediately MARINAKIS reiterated the MUA's long range com mitment to construct addi tional Rotating Biological Contactor Units iRBC) to further upgrade the level of treatment at the plant. "The concentration of the organic material in the wastewater entering the plant is stronger than the facility was designed to handle, thus requiring the additional biological process units." he explained The 6.3 million gallon per day capacity of the Ocean City plant was designed to handle the city's wastewater treatment needs until the year 1990
Marinakis reported the where the County Planning population has already, in Board projected it would be fi 1984. reached the level in 1995- ; SUMMER SALE SWIMWEAR, SPORTSWEAR. ' I The Martha Shop / JJ t t\N 3405 Pacific Ave . Wild wood J/J 5 522-2526 OPEN sgtfL
