Figures released by the National Marine Fisheries Service set the total number of salt water anglers on both the east and west coasts at as many as 21 million persons who spend a whopping $5 billion a year in direct pursuit of their sport. And, surprisingly enought, the figures are increasing by a whopping 4.7 per cent annually. These— salt water fishermen take^ an estimated 500 million food fish from the two oceans and the estuaries every year. , F or those of us in a hea vi-„ ly tourist-impacted area

like Cape May County, ; these figures become im porta nt. since much of the tourist spending in this area and all along the Jersey Coast is directly and indirectly attached to fishing. . Sl'RVEYS DONE locally by the Cape May County Public Affairs Department and in Ocean County by the State of New Jersey in^dicate that nearly two ^thirds of all adults coming to the ocean to vacation have an interest in fishing. It becomes a moot point as to whether or not they . actually fish. Given the time, availability of

facilities, quality fishing ajid*"the opportunity, they s can and do take advantage s of the fishing. ? It is more important to t note here that more and ) more youngsters and more and more women are join--1 ing the ranks of the outdoor people in the country. And, t what is even more pleas- ■ ing. more and more family groups a re getting involved » with the sport. More and I more retirees are also I seeking the benefits of a day on or near the water with a fishing rod. THAT MORE and more women are entering into fishing may be a social phenomenon. More and more single parent homes find the mother faced with | raising children who have an interest in outdoor recreation Mom has to | take over the role of being the leader on fishing, crabbing. camping and even hunting outings in the absence of a male head of the household In some instances young married women are finding it easier <and perhaps much better 1 to join "em rather than to try to beat them If the spouse is a avid hunter and fisherman, the new bride often finds that by sharing in the recreation, be it fish. hunt, camp, sports or whatever, there are many tradeoffs and the relationship can only benefit Later, when there are children, what better to lead a family group on a fishing outing than a pair of parents who have enjoyed jaut of doors activity during the dating and early marriage years7 Kids love the outdoors and more and more parents "are starting to see the benefits IT TAKES a close family unit to be able to spend a week in a camper on a trip away from home 1 especially if it rains' That women were beginning to enter into what at one time was a predominately male bastion surfaced when party and charter boats moved from a single head to two heads The move became more positive when the heads were identified for men and women. As the party boats got bigger, and nicer, more women entered into Mhe sport Language took an upturn for the better, alcohol consumption per capita dropped and in general, the level of activity moved up to a more socially accepted level All of thislis for the good. As the moms showed up, so did the kids, and boy or girl, it is starting to matter less and less all the time. And. the younger a person starts to fish or hunt, the more apt he or she is to stay with it for a lifetime. And, the younger he (or she, for that matter) starts, . the more enthusiastically the approach to the sport. WE THINK all of it is j great. We can't handle the clumsiness which attaches to writing about fisherpersons or fishers as some of our more liberated women writers want us to do. In deference to the lady anglers we know, and while we like having them around, we are not ready to cave into the NOW movement which seems bent on neutering us all by such

g terms as fisher and y fisberperson. e We have found women to be tough competitors, ask5 ing for and giving no 1 quarter most of the time. ~ Sure we bait some hooks, take off some fish, and r have to listen to a few squeals of feminine excitement from time to time. ' But we've lost our share of 1 pools to lady anglers, and i so have a lot of other > males. 1 EACH WEEK we process hundreds of names in our work with fishing. We are f more and more pleased ' each week to find more and 1 more distaff angler 1 representatives. Here are a few from the current week . Betty Rogers, of Avalon, leads in the Yellowfin tuna Division of the Avalon Borough summer fishing tournament with a 90-lb. yellowfin. AdefeHines of Berlin, N.J. wofr--a pqoLwhile fishing the upper Delaware Bay with a 8 lb. 14 oz. fluke. Jane Patterson of Giassboro won a pool on Capt. Charles Shaffer's Starfish with a nine-lb bluefish. Kody Barto. age 13, boated a 13 '4 -lb. bluefish while fishing at Avalon Shoal on the Nebraska III with Dave Rider. Kody is from State College. Pa. Linda Evans, of Pennsgrove. took a pool on Capt. Dave Cicchitti's party boat Twilight out of Wildwood Crest's Blake's Dock with her five lb. 6 oz. fluke Kathy Bryson of Sharon Hill. Pa took a night chumming pool on the Royal Flush out of Wildwood Crest with a 14 lb 1 oz blue Marsha Wormack of Kensington. Philadelphia, was a pool winner with a 3'-.- lb fluke Eileen Clark of Sicklerville caught a 15-lb. 3-oz. bluefish to take a Friday night pool on the Adventurer II out of Wildwood Yacht Basin Every week, we get more and more feminine pool winners and we hope the 'rend continues TOIRAMENTS con 'inue Two big tournaments are in the offering in August for Jersey Cape anglers First is the $100,000 bluefish tournament out of Sykes Marina and Yacht Sales on Old Avalon Boulevard. Avalon. A cash prize of $5,000 goes to the boat catching the heaviest bluefish in the tournament Other awards ranging from $1,250 down to $100 will go to entrants finishing from second to 13th place. Anglers can win $50,000 for topping the existing state record bluefish and an additional $50,000 for beating the world record for bluefish. Entry fee is $200. Entry blanks are available at the marina Tournament director ■ Chuck Roseman has invited all tournament participants and persons interested in participating to come to the marina toeee a replica of the 31 Mb. world record bluefish which is on display at the marina through the tournament.
