Choice of Cage Coach Stirs Wildwood Row

It seems that things can't be done in Wildwood without a little controversy, even in the sports world. The Board of education appointed James OiCarlo as the school's head basketball coach, .upsetting quite a few ybasketball fans in the resort. The board voted 6 to 1 behind closed doors to give the job to DiCarlo ovfcr Joe Bimbo, the only other candidate for the position. When public discussion, was allowed after the vote, a call was made that

politics have a great deal to do with the decision. BIMBO WAS the choice of mafjy folks I spoke with prior to the decision. The former junior-varsity coach is well liked by the players and has more than enough experience to handle the job well. This is one reason why I can't understand the decision. DiCarlo comes to Wildwood from Upper Perkiomen High School in Pennsburg, Pa. DiCarlo replaces Greg Tracey, a coach who had so little confidgpce in himself that he j(|Pd for a vote of his •jrtayers to see if he should stay on or not. One of the votes was taken following a crucial loss to Hammonton. Earlier, the board's athletic committee recommended Tracey be rehired as coach, but then reversed field following public outery from patients and alumni. Tracey coached at «■ . Wildwood for the past four years. Board member Harry Breslin said the move to pick DiCarlo will be better for the school and eveyrone will get a fair shake. OCEAN CITY'S Ron

A FEW WEEKS ago I mentioned Frank Riggitano and his chance at the big times, kicking for the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League. Well, said to say, the Lower

Cape May graduate will have to put his plans on hold for a while. Riggitano traveled to the Bills' training camp in New York and failed his physical examination. Doctors found a small "spot" on his hip and wanted to look into It further. Fear is that it may be a tumor and Riggitanb will not be able '.*&> play this season. Back in February, Riggitano signed three onewear deals with the club. Hopefully it will work out for Susquehanna University standout in the upcoming months. More later THIS SATURDAY runners from all over South Jersey will get together in Ocean City for a MidSummer Beach Run. The race is set for 9 in the mornipg at 34th and the beach. \ Trophies will be awarded to the first man and woman to cross the finish line and plagues will go to the top runner in each age group. The event is being sponsored by the Ocean City Runners Club and Active Outfitters. REMARKS: Time for a few questions that don't really need to be answered. Now that the Olympics are finally under way. have we heard enough about things like traffic jams, weather and security for athletes? Will the men's and women's basketball teams win the gold'' What will be the major controversy at the games? Drugs? Cheating? Bobby Knight? There has to be at least one. Will John Denny be the key to the Phillies' move to overtake the New York Mets? Can the Phils afford to keep both Len Matuszek and Tim Corcoran on the team at the same time? Wnjkwill win the Rookie

of the Year Award in the 1 National League? Juan Samuel or Dwight Gooden? Does anyone really care who wins the American League West9 Can Kansas City finally put it together and take the title? Art the Detroit Tigers for real? I am starting to believe it myself Was the trade with the Phillies the key to the Tigers' success? Is Willie Hernandez.more valuable than the Fmillies thought9
