k Cape Soil Center Field Day

| COURT HOUSE# - 9 Cluster Belcher, manager 9 of the USDA Soil Conservai| tion Service Plant Material ✓ Center at Swaiaton. lias ani nounced a field day to show the center's research plots on conservation plants, cover crops and windbreaks for thetyastal point area. The field day program is scheduled for Tuesday. Aug 14. 10:30 a.m. through 3 p.m. There will be a box lunch served on the grounds for those who phone the Plant Material Center at 465-5901 to reserve lunch for a nominal charge. RECENTLY the Cape I May Center became one of ! six plant material centers I nationally to have inhouse r computer capabilities \ when it installed a | PMC/250 operating system. The computer in1 stallation will be a highlight of the field day. John N. MacLeod, senior county agricultural agent, said that this is an excellent opportunity for people to view the important conservation plant research work being conducted at the center. / THE CENTER'S number one priority from 1965 until 1983 was the development of plants for shorelinerelated conservation problems. including sand dune stabilization and tidal shoreline stabilization. During that period, it has released the following plants which are now or soon will be commercially available: 'Cape' American beachgrass. 'Sea Isle' Japanese sedge. Atlantic' coast ^4 panicgrass. and Emerald Sea' shore juniper. These efforts toward improved plants for shorelinerelated conservation problems will soon result in the release of improved plants of smooth cordgrass. saltmeadow cor- I dgrass. rugosa rose. | hayberry. and beach plum I MACLEOD SAID work is _ I continuing at the Plant | Material Center on other I shoreline problems such I

as: the development of a winter hardy sea oats strain, and renovation of beachgrass on frontal dunes by fertilization. In addition to the shoreline work, the center has been instrumental in releasing or bringing back into commercial use: 'Rem Red' Amur honeysuckle and ' V A - 7 0 ' shrub lespedeza. In 1983. Belcher said, the first priority of work became the evaluation of plants and methods of using them for controlling

erosion on low residue crops such as soybeans and vegetable crops. Work has been initiated on a number of projects relating to this priority. They include: temporary and permanent windbreaks for vegetable producing areas on light textured soil, interseeding cover crops before the principal crj^, such as soybeans. is harvested; and screening of a large number of plants for their potential use as cover in coastal plain and piedmont crop production.
