Lower Township New Notes
(From Page 16) and David F. Brand Jr. will share a large room abutting the treasurer's office, which has been used by the emergency manager and for record storage. Partitions are supposed to be installed there so that each of the four officials will have a private office. Elmo Bianco, a salesman for Associate Building Specialties of Blackwood, was preparing estimates on the office renovations last week. FOTHERGILL recommended last week and council agreed to table, until its Aug. 20 meeting, discussion on a proposed ordinance that would impose charges on businesses and others whose trash exceeds a certain collection limit. Faced with skyrocketing fees from private trash haulers, some Lower businesses are now depending on the township to collect their trash. Last month, local activist Mary Baxter urged council to consider the proposed ordinance. She argued that, without it, homeowners would be unfairly taxed for municipal tax collection for household loads while businesses pay the same rate for commercial volumes of trash. But, said Fothergill, 'there's nobody screeming too loudly at the moment." ERMA PARK residents will probably be pleased to learn that the township plans to pave Fay Avenue and connecting streets. According to an agreement with a developer approved by council last week, the township will pave Fay Avenue, which is > owned by the developer, when road crews pave the L side streets; the township P will then bill the developer * for the cost of paving Fay. Nothing was mentioned about when the road work would be done. Fothergill told one resident last week that scheduled repairs to local streets have been delayed because the township has been obliged to divert much of its work force to trash hauling.
GLENWOOD PLACE residents of Cape May Beach are in for a little inconvenience, though. Council last week approved a street opening permit, allowing the gas company «-• to dig a 157- by one-foot trench along the street. No dates were given for the work, however. FORMER TOWNSHIP Mayor John T. Lincoln, public education officer for Flotilla 82, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Cape May, will return Sunday from two weeks' duty at the Olympics. A second-class boatswains' mate with the Coast Guard reserve, Lincoln is serving on a search and rescue boat at Long Beach, Calif., site of the Olympic yachting and wind-gliding events. About 750 people are assigned to the Coast Guard Olympics Task Force for crowd control, search and rescue, law enforcement, waterside security, dignitary protection platforms and airborne surveillance. Lincoln writes the Boating Safety column for The Lantern.
