The Stone Harbor Women's Civic Club will be holding its annual Art Show Sunday at the club at 96th and'the beach. This is our one chance to see the talented works of our local artists, of which we have many. There is no registration fee, just take your work t# , the clubhouse between 9 and 11 a m and enter it in one of the following* classes: oils, watercolors, acrylics, photography, arts and crafts, or a special class for children. Vicki Wear and Marie Wood are co-chairing the event as usual Me. and Mrs. Eldest Blair, who run the big arts and crafts show under tfll tent, know all there is to know about judging and have agreed to act in that capacity for this shovy. The show itself opens at 11 a.m. and awards will be made at 4 p.m. An enormously attractive gift will be given to the best in the show. There is an added attraction this year. Pearl Slobodan S gift of a painting to be raffled off for the benefit of the Civic Club, and the winning ticket will be drawn at the show. Councilman R. Jack Fitzpatrick will award the ribbons witlf the assistance of LitUe Miss Stone Harbor, Nicole Anzoione, and all the gals who bought chances for the Slobodian painting at the fashion show will be there, so it promises to be an impor tant social occasion as well as a culturally enriching event. Hurry, hurry, hurry — don't miss being part of this island's most cultural event ever Peter Orth, the nationally acclaimed piano virtuoso, will be giving a concert at the Wetlands In stitute on Stone Harbor Boulevard 8: 15 p.m. Thurs day, Aug 16. Call Apropos Unique. 967 7530 or Doris Moore at home, 967-7667 for tickets if you haven't got ten yours yet. Pauline Carew Owens, a designer of 3-dimensional string art, has created a new art form called Nail Art. When her husband, Joe. put an addition on their home in Riverview ^ark, a suburb of Reading. Pa., there were a lot of nails left over and having descended from a long line of artistic talent (one ancestor helped design the Liberty Bell, another created the logo for Victor Talking Mahine Co.) Pauline put her innate skill to work and drew a pattern for a buquet on a pine board, then followed the design by hammering nails on the outline of her sketch. The result was something totally original and delightful She gave further originals to friends who. with her husband, talked her into creating a full-time business called Pol.O. Craft in 1975. They were advised by their attorney to obtain a patent, which they did, and also got copyrights for over 20 nail flower arrangements HER HUSBAND is business manager and in charge of buying for the firm. Seven of their children, Keven. Tracey, Mark, Mary Beth. Erin (guide and super-
saleswoman i, Jody. and iO-year-old Ryan all work on producing these works of art. Erin tells us 20 different types of nails are us- ; ed, all carpenters -They can be made to order, since they mix their own paints, frequently us jjng swatches of wallpaper for their bisic colors. 'Though they appepr to be made of gossamer silk they awi obviously hard as hails and can be cleaned with a hair blow dryer or tooth brush. We loved each design buf go along with the Pittsburgh Flower Show in awarding them first prize for Blue Glacier, made with 1,119 nails. The Owens are currently working on a Christmas wreath and a designed Nail Rainbow for a 25th Wedding Anniversary present. Be sure to see these works before leaving Stone Harbor. We suspect they will soon become collector's items and thus more than most of us can afford to spend, since each one is lovingly handwrought. "If you missed the remarkable art show given by students of the St. Bar nabas Art School at the home of Fury Ferraco last weekend you still h£ve a chance to see these remarkable paintings by students of Father William Shelton Saturday and Sunday surrounded by the ambience of Fury's beautiful gallery and pool at 2723 Bay Drive in Fishing Creek From 10 until 6 o'clock you will have the opportunity to see another side of life. Both Fury and Father Shelton are hosts without peer and if you have discriminating guests with knowledge in the art world you couldn't give them a better treat Artists exhibiting will be Gail Beit man, Kathv Daniel. Peg Ditlmar. Irene Ewing. Fury Ferraco. Martha Fidler. Jean Franco. Evelyn Lay ton, Samuel l^ezzi. Midge McDonough. Fran Moore. Susan Morse. Patricia Nelson. Bess Pearce, Chad Randle. Evelyn Schipani. George Smith. Linda Stote. t arolan Toft and Audry Van Brunt. We called Jean < Mrs Wiley ) Christie today to see how she was feeling after undergoing surgery at Burdette Tomlin and she said she was feeling great— she sounded that way. but she said it was mainly because of her many friends' support She was completely overwhelmed by the cards, flowers, prayers and expressions of love she received in the hospital We're not surprised— this is an unusually loving community and Jean is one of its best-loved members She was worrying how to express her thanks to so many and we said. 'Don't worry about it, they'll all understand " We are confident they will, too ANY EXCUSE for giving a party at North Wildwood Campground on Beach Avenue is a great one. so a christening party was recently held for Nigel Augqstine and Dick Anslie.
two newly-adopted Cab- * bage Patch Dolls Ood- f| fathers were: Calvin II Hickman and BUI DeMare. II A sumptuous buffet dinner ■ was served and the II newborn cabbages receiv II ed gifts of Care Bear Bibs. II Negel is the son of Mrs Bonnie l>ongello and Dick was adopted by Matt Smigelski. May Smigelski, grandmother of Dick, organized the celebration and made a huge cheesecake for the occasion. Unfortunately both the new babies overate and suffered tummyaches as a result. Their new mother knew just how to comfort them and they have both fully recovered. NEWS NOTES: Dick Haggarty of 67th Street, Avalon, was taking a friend for a ride on the Inland Waterway last Saturday demonstrating the joys of his new 25-foot Hydrasport when they spotted a 19-footer hard aground and the owner walking out to the Coast Guard boat for a lift. He made a slight miscalculation and forgot to throw out his anchor when he left his boat. On their return trip Dick and seamate spotted the unmanned outboard floating lazily out with the tide, threw a line on it, towed it back to Harvey's Port Of Call and notified the Coast Guard who knew that a boat was missing and said they'd get in touch with the owner I Under maritime law, as I we understand it and rules obtaining for salvage rights, Dick Haggarty owned two boats for a short span of time— We'll bet the owner was delighted his boat was picked up by a Mr Nice Guy. LET S FACE it, we date back to the time when a fashion show was nothing but a stream of attractive size eights wearing beautiful clothe^ we couldn't afford Would you believe a fashion show where they modeled sizes from eight to 20 and larger if ordered*1 On Tuesday Ju ly 31. at Wildwood Country Club we went to the show put on by Quintessence. 9820 Third Ave for the Women's Civic Club of Stone Harbor It was original, outrageously funny at times, the clothese were pure heaven and the luncheon the best we've encountered at any fundraising activity thus far Instead of serving a Thankgi ving dinner preceded by a good rich soup we had a choice of unlimited hors d oeuvres including rumaki skewered with the sweetest fresh pineapple you've ever eaten Main course was chicken salad surrounded by huge slices of fresh melon, and dessert was sorbet Sallie Ruth MacC'orkell was commentator and explained the show would depict the quintessence of a day in the life of a typical Stone Harbor Woman. Jane Boss, who was in charge of getting the models, was first to appear KNOWNlf'OR her statuesque grace. Jane schlepped out in a rumpled blue bathrobe, curlers in her hair covered by a sloppy net. wearing tiredlooking bedsocks on her feet. It brought the house down. She was followed by a series of stunning gals (Page20Pta«»e)
