Today we will discuss plant allergies in our ongoing series on allergy Piant allergies for our purposes will fall into two categor ies— air-borne allergic responses and contact-re-lated sensitivity. "Aeroallergens" are par tides carried by the air which cause allergic reactions in the skin, lungs and/or the eyes. Such forms of allergy can be induced not only through the pollen of plants but also from bird feathers, mold, flour, and even clouds of insects. Pollens are the air-borne allergen which most con enrn Iho nnhlii; PaIIph cern
grains are actually living cells which get into our system. If one's body is hypersensitive to pollen, it will interpret the pollen in the lining of the bronchial tubes as an invader and attack it. EXTRA PRODUCTION of mucus is one way to eliminate an undesirable particle* as it may wash it out of the system. Tearing of the eyes is a similar •pproach. Some plants get q "bum -ap." like goldenrod. which actually has pollen that requires insects rather than the wind to move it. from flower to flower Ragweed, however, deserves its bad name as its pollen has been carried as far as 400 miles by the wind. This accounts for th^ effect of "ellergv season ' on both those living in urban areas and islands where ragweed may not even be present. Tre» pollens can also be allergy culprits, although they do not travel . very far. CONTACT WITH plants is more likely to cause a reaction to contact than an allergic reaction. Poison ivy, oak. and sumac contain oily substances in their leaves which irritate the skin This is a protective mechanism for the plant The rashes caused by these plant^ are not allegies. simply natures intended reaction to the plants: poisons. It is possible to have an allergy to
these plants, but that effect will be far more severe than the usual rash. A too-often told tale of air-borne reaction to poison ivy is the camper who inadvertently throws_iyy in the campfire. ancfthe windborne poisions are inhaled through the smoke, causing great anguteh and requiring prorftp\ medical attention. 1 3\ whii f \ Clergies can be uncoritfWtable and annoying, occasionally i hey can in their most ex t e m e f 0 r m y c,a lied anaphylaxix." bC fatal %

Any combination of the^e symptoms can occur At the first sign of worsening of an allergic reaction, medical attention should b< sought. Do not ignore these warning signs, or try to treat yourself.
