Tanks Face Closer Check

COURT HOUSE - At present time there are no state regulations on the maintenance or testing of abandoned underground storage tcnks, says Freeholder Gerald M. Thornton. The New Jersey Legislature has pending legislation which would re- . • quire regular testing ar.d maintenance of any existing underground gasoline tanks. Without regulation of ficiab do not know where all the abandoned gasoLne tankr are In the county.

Therefore the responsibility for the regulation of these tanks falls to the local municipalities Under local ordinances and is usually entrusted to their construction official or fire official. HOWEVER. ANY abandoned underground gasoline storage tank that is leaking or is suspected of leaking must be i e ported to the Department of Environmental Protection and the county Health Department. It is the policy of the countv Health Department to investigate any complau.ts and to cooperate

In the future, under the County Environmental Health Act the county Health Department plans to assist the local municipalities in reviewing and preparing the appropriate codes for the maintenance and testing of i abandoned, underground gasoline tanks. > It is now a requirement that any new tanks must undergo test for corrosion and pressure. Most new tanks are made of fiber glass and are less likely to leak. 1

with the Department of EnI vironmemll Protection f nd the local municipality <n resolving the problem, Thornton said. The'guidelines and model codes for the regulation of abandoned, underground leaxing tanks is as follows: Ideally the tanks should be removed; if not removed they should be filled with sand or concrete. IN THE PAST, the county Health Department has overseen these procedures and has sampled nearby water supplies to make sure that there has been no resultant pollution.
