I Cape Swimmer In Olympic Tryouts
AVALON - Orfe local resident is watching the heroics of United States swimmers in the Olympics with more than passing interest—he had a shot at becoming one of them. Rob Bedford, son of Mr. and Mrs. .Richard Bedford, 42nd Street, competed in weeklong swimming trials at Indianapolis, Ind. earlier this summer. He qualified for the trials b/f winning two gold medals in the Metro Conference finals, setting records in both the 100 and 200-yard breast stroke. He also earned a silver medal in the 200-yard individual medley. BEDFORD SWAM for the University of South Carolina, which won the Metro championship, and was chosen as the conference's swimmer of the year. During his career, he has established records in colIlege. his high school (William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia), his former summer swim club ''in Philadelphia, and at
various age levels in the Middle Atlantic AAU. After his ninth place finish in the Olympic trials, Bedford returned to his summer job on the Wildwood Beach Patrol. He plans to complete his education and will also serve > assistant swimming coach to Steve Collins at the University of South Carolina in the fall.
Two Teams Share Soccer Loop Lead
STONE HARBOR - The borough soccer league had some surprise upsets this week. The Goblins and Martins lost two games during the week. The first game of the week had the Goblins beating the Whales 3-1. The second game of the night featured a second half goal by John Errico of the Purple Martins from 30 yards out The Martins were led by great defense from David llufncr and Amy Deehet. In Wednesday's games, the Blue Whales looked as if the> would gel their first victory as they were leading the Ravens 2-1 with five minutes remaining. However, the Whales couldn't hold off the Ka\ens' attack. Chris Hall and Chris Rice scored to give the Ravens the 3-2 victory In the other games the Goblins climbed back into first place by
beating the Martins 3-0. The Goblins controlled the action throughout the game, never allowing the Martins a chance. FRIDAY NIGHT produc ed the season's biggest upset. Both first place teams fell to defeat The Ravens beat the Goblins 1-0 on a goal by Joe Kauterman and good defense by Wayne Voltz. In the other games the Blue Whales captured their first victory. ; of the season with a 3-2 win over the Martins.
