outdoors with Lou Rodia A Chance for All in Bluefish Tourney

Cape May County-based boats will take to the ocean j Saturday in quest of the ' $100,000 (plus i pot of gold which will come to the angler who lands a bluefish bigger than the present world record 31 3/4 lb. monster caught off the North Carolina Coast. That fish is the all tackle/ rod and reel world record which must be beaten to win all the marbles in the first annual Sykes Marina and Yacht Sales $100,000 Bluefish tournament. For any angler who bests the existing state record, the reward will be $50,000. Since the state record is considerably smaller than

the world record, it will be " possible to win the $50,000 state record prize without winning the second $50,000 for besting the world record. AND. TIIE~ angler catching the largest fish might not win either of the $50,000 prizes, but is assured of a guaranteed $5,000 for taking first place. That's how the contest shapes Aip Are there any "favontes" in the quest .for the contest prizes? | Not at all. Pro party and charter boat skippers down to the rankest amateur who ever put a bait into the water have an almost identical chance to win in this

and/or any other salt water tournament where there ^are fish involved. That 's because if you are lucky enough to pass over a school of fish, you might be just lucky enough to catch that big world record fish. The odds are the same for everyone regarding hooking the fish. After that, several things come into play. One is the status of the angler's equipment. Fishing with bad line, poorly tied knots, frayed leaders, tired swivels and snaps' which might pop open or break; rods with scored guides, hooks that are not sharp or reels with drags that are not smooth all might be reasons for losing that world record slammer blue. THAT'S ONE place where the 'pro's' have an edge. They WILL check their drags, and WILL check the line. They WILL tie good knots. They WILL sharpen their hooks. They WON'T use fati-gued swivels and snaps that are so worn or corroded that they might break under stress. They WILL have worked out a plan of attack. The 'pro's' will know the places where there MIGHT be blues. They won't spend too much time on areas they alreay know are barren of fish ail the time. They will go to the places that they have caught fish before because they have carefully marked those spots in their heads or on the charts. They will also keep a sharp ear on the radio, listening for clues that might put them on schools of big fish. They will pick the brains of everyone who might be able to give them the slightest clue as to where they might have some kind of an edge. AND. DO YOU know what? It may produce fish for the pro's' but there is no guarantee that they will emerge as the winners. That's why the tournaments are so much fun. The bluefish. strange Creature that he is. is the unknown factor. No one knows where that big contest winner might be lurking, and as a result, any of you. or me, just might be the one to hook it. Good luck to all of you who are coming in second , and the rest of the spots in / / the winner's circle. 'i really v ^believe that T/jv -going/to catch that-on£bigj)Ibe^md take alj'the martfleT Ihave the Rolls/ Royce " alreadyordered i except for signing the cpmract) I'll do that AFTER the contest is over. l( you have not yet regWerecT^call Sykes Marina at 967 -4003 04 4004 for information or stop in at Sykes ^Marina, 290 Old Avalon Blvd., Avalon, and pick up an application. By the way, the 31 3/4 lb. world record bluefish is on display at the Marina. Reese Taxidermy of Florida mounted the fish after the world record status was determined, and a replica is on display at Sykes Marina. If you have never seen a 31 3/4 lb. bluefish, stop in to see what one looks like. REPORTS: Fluke catches have shown marked improvement in the ocean and in Delaware Bay. Inland tfatervfay fluke action has slowed tjfTfcome but ■

there are bigger fish along ? with the little ones wh&h are throwback. Cape May ? Point has been producing i good mixed catches of : weakfish, fluke and snapi per blues along with occasional sea bass. The ocean adjacent to the inlets has also started to show signs of producing > more fluke along with some F small weakfish and snapper blues along the beach. Farther off, bluefish are I bigger and definitely are I biting better on day trolling i and night chumming trips, i Warmer water seems to be the key. i A Delaware Bay hot spot, i Buoy No. 16, has been productive, but dirty water there slows down the action. Weaks and fluke are being caught there when i conditions ar right. Weakfish are also mixed with fluke around Miah Maul Light. AT FRANK'S Boats in St,rath£iere, Candy Jankowski reports that fluke are4still biting bet- * ween the dock and the inlet and in the Flat Creek area. Bob Deal of Marlton boated 24 fluke and Alan Bush of Allentown, N.J. had,1 25 keepers. Leo Midura of Hammonton caught two dozen big blueclaw crabs and Eric Tellefson of Radnor, Pa. caught three dozen. Candy said crabbing has definitely improved and reminded crabbers that there is a 4-inch minimum (measured pont to point across the back of the crab) and that female crabs with the egg sac attached must be returned to the water. It is illegal to keep spawning crabs or crabs under four inches in size. Big Fluke: Mary Daly, age 11, landed a nine lb. fluke while fishing on her dad's boat Pelican out of Ocean Drive Dock in Cape May. Her fish was caught on spinning tackle and a minnow-squid combination bait Wayne Wright, of Wildwood. caught a 5 1/4 lb. fluke on minnow bait while fishing his own boat Aweright off Cape May. Samantha Quintus of North Cape May caught a 6 lb. 2 oz. fluke while fishing at Cape May Point with Emil Quintus on the boat Hop yfoad U. Samantha was / fishing a minnow and cut sfiarit strip. \_Fr£d As col i of Wildwood CreSt^boa^d a 22 -lb. pollock while fishing on his "^-boat String Along on a Wreck 60 miles off Wildwood.
