Beach Suit Blamed For Project Delay ± .Ti •?
SEA ISLE CITY - Mayor Dominic C. Raffa has blamed supporters of Commissioner William VanArtsaalen and Van Artsdalen, personally for the delay in a dredging project aimed at restoring the beach and dune in the area I from tst Street to 29th Street, which he says is left vulnerable to even a minor shore storm. In a new. release last Wednesday. Raffa said Sea Isle City is still suffering from the after-effecLs of a Idwsuit that was eventually thrown out of court. In that suit, brought by VanArtsdalen supporters, residents Horace Haffert and Charles Gillespie at-
tempted to show the city acted illegally on a bond ordinance to pay for the dredging of Townsend's Inlet to supply sand for the area. 45th to 86th Streets. THE SECOND phase was for the dredge to move to Corson's Inlet and supplysand in the north end and in Upper Township's Strathmere. where the beach had been badly eroded. The March 29 coastal storm focused attention on this area because it was here that the poor condition of the beach permitted the wash-out of block after block of built-up dune. Sea Isle City lost its dune from 1st to 12th Streets and in other areas, particularly 24th. 27th and 29th Streets, where a bulkhead and promendade prevented anyfurther intrusion by the ocean
KAFKA SAlp the 45-day delay caused by the lawsuit was critical It icost the city enormous lega I and engineering fees and hiked the cost of the bond rate which went up during that time frame. h6 stated. • VanArtsdalen. Haffert and Gillespie Were proved wrong in.their1 court action and have been proved wrong in their position to the detrimentlof the entire city and Upper Township. Now. the cbunty, city, township, state and federal government will be forced to expend an as yet undetermined amount to right these wrongs," Raffa charged.
