I The illustration on the August page of m> calender is a watercolor painting of a young womar resting in a hammock and reading a good book Reading is a wonderfully relaxing pastime, especially now on a lazy, hazy day in summer when the shore breeze cools the air and the laughter of children provides background music. I'd like to recommend some books to you for summertime reading. They are both favorites of mine and deal with my favorite places / tffe beaches, barrier islands and backbays of the Atlantic coast.

Henry Beston's The Outermost House is a modern classic about a year of life on the great beach of Cape Cod. I recently learned that the house has since been wash- f ed into the sea. Beautiful Swimmers by William Warner and Striper byJohn Cole are readable, funny and affectionate tributes to two of the best tasting and most determinedly pursued creatures of the coast / the blue crab and the striped-bas^

Some books I like because they are handy references rather than for reading from cover to cover. They help me identify and learn about the tides;, and things I see along the beach, a Beachcomber's Botany. Life In and Around the Salt Marsh. A Kettle of Fish. and Life in the Shifting ' Dunes are all carry-along field guides on coastal » natural history. SS Helps More than Retirees

By DEL BROOKS Many people equate Social Security with the elderly and retirement, but the program actually provides benefits for people of all ages Retirement may seem a long way off in the , eyes of young people, but monthly retirement checks are only one of a package of benefits available to anyone who works long enough in Social Securitycovered employment Disability insurance for example, is an important feature of the Social Security program for young workers. It provides benefits to workers who are so severely disabled that there is reason to believe they will be unable to return to work for at least a year In such cases, a worker can start receiving monthly payments after an initial 5-month waiting period. And the benefits are payable at any time before age 65. THESE BENEFITS will continue for as long as the person remains disabled. Moreover, a person who received a disability benefits for 24 months becomes eligible for Medicare, which can help meet the costs Of health care. If a married worker becomes disabled, monthly payments can also be made to the spouse and children.
