Over the next several weeks I will be writing about the many Public Health Activities provided by the Community Nursing Services of the County Health Department This week we will look injo one of the major Public Health problems of our age and the program that our nursing division offers to help people cope with venereal or sexually transmitted diseases. The sexually transmitted diseases are conditions that are usually spread during sexual activity. They are as old as recorded history, with such famous persons as Henry VIII, Al Capone. and Christopher Columbus known to be vic- . tims Major epidemics oc--v curred after both World a. Wars and a new strain of x* gonorrhea appeared jv following the Niet Nam yi conflict. VJ FOK many years the cA major problems were conjj) lined to syphilis and gonorIJj rhea. With the end of the /I Second World War and the rt* use of penicillin these jg diseases dropped to their r lowest levels in the 1950s By the mid-1960's, gonor5 rhea has returned to the point where now it is the most commonly reported communicable disease al ter the common cold The number of reported cases of gonorrhea in Cape May County in 198:1 was 269 In addition to syphilis and gonorrhea, there are many other sexually transmitted diseases such as Herpes. Simpl'ex II. Trichomoniasis, urinary tract infections. Granuloma Venereum, genital warts, lice and scabies inot always acquired by sexual contact >. TAKEN VI ,T< XiKTIIKK. m these sexually transmitted W diseases infect more than in million Americans each ,/ year Eighty-five percent ol the cases involve people 0 between the ages of 15 and K Mi An estimated 100.000 $ women are left sterile each ) ^ year as a result of STD These diseases are spreading because sexual activity, especially among young people, is increas 1 ing People are unaware of the diseases, so they ignore the symptoms and the diseases are spread In lected people do not inform partners to prevent lurther spreading of the disease Many symptoms are not easily noticed so the disease spreads to other parts of the body Because immunity cannot he built up against them and there is no vaccination against them. STD's can occur again and again INTKKATKI) sexually transmitted diseases can have serious and perma | nent consquences such as

I blindness, sterility and in ; the more severe cases. : death. 1 Almost all sexually < transmitted diseases can ' be cured. The sooner you begin treatment, the less chance there is of perma - : nent damage If for any 3 reason you suspect that you ¥ have a sexually transmit1 ted disease, get help im- $ 1 mediately. In every state, jj minors can be examined - without parental consent. xI The Cape May County 1 Health Department has a ^ I free and confidential - veneral disease clinic for 8 I the treatment of sexually \ ; transmitted diseases. The I I clinic is staffed by a recep- i tionist. a nurse, and a doctor. T II K NECESSARY I diagnostic testing will be done on your visit to the I clinic and whatever treatment is prescribed will be given free of charge. All information necessary to treatment and control of the disease will be kept confidential. If you are diagnosed as having a sexually transmitted disease, we will ask you to tell your sexual partner* si to get tested immediately. Tell them the name of the disease and that ihev may have it. even il they show no symptoms. II you do not want to notify I hem yourself, help us to n> »'y them. You will be doing them a favor and also reducing your chances of becoming reinfected II we ask you to return to the clinic for a follow up examination, please follow through on ( those instructions.
