E. Point Lighthouse Fete Held

EAST POINT - The Maurice River Historical Society held its annual open house at East Point Light Saturday, Aug. 11. The 1852 lighthouse housed displays and exhibits by several organizations and individuals. Participants included the U.S. Coast Guar'1. Cumberland County Communications Center (Fire/Rescue), Bill Biggs of Port Norris with photos, post cards and curiosities relating to the Maurice River and Delaware Bay and Woodcarver Gorge Stiles of Millville. Owned by the state, the lighthouse was slated for almost certain demolition after a 1971 fire destroyed the upper portion. The historical society was allowed to rebuild what had become the last remaining lighthouse on the shores of the Delaware Bay and in 1980 the U.S. Coast Guard agreed to install a new beacon, now operating as an aid to navigation. East Point Light is located on Delaware Bay, two miles south of Heislerville, in Cumberland County. A Rookery Visit by Twilight STONE HARBOR - A j guided twilight visit to the oldest heron rookery on the j East Coast at 7 tonight in the Wetlands Institute, will be followed by a colorful slide talk The institute is located m the salt marsh one mile east of Stone Harbor The fee is $1 for Wetlands members and $2 for nonmembers Ornithologist Anne Galli. assistant executive director at the institute, will lead the group in their own ears from Wetlands to the Stone Harbor Bird Sarictuary between 111th and 116th Streets and Third Avenue. Galli will present and narrate "Great Blues and Other Wading Wonders", a half hour slide show The Wetlands Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of public education and research concerning the wetlands ecosystem It is open daily from 10-4:30 Tuesdays through Saturdays. Beef Dinner MARMORA - The Mar mora Volunteer Fire Co. will hold its annual roast beef dinner, an "all you can eat" event. 2-7 p.m. Sunday Eat in and take out service will be available. The fire house is located on Old Tuckahoe Road.
