Thanks to constant playing on MTV. INXS came from •♦nowhere to become stars overnight. Their latest outing. The swing (Atco) will surely attract more followers, but. in all honesty, there's little substance to this music. Everything is so calculated and cold, one enjoys the sound the first few, playings but then realizes this is nothing more than candy for the ears. J INXS have their fingers on the pulse of what's happening this minute, but it's doubtful many will ?are to remember them several years from now. I've never been overly impressed with Rubber Rodeo's previous efforts. : but its new album Scenic '• views i Mercury > is actually a lot of fun. This band plays a hybrid of country and western and new wave, and while some numbers j sutler from being too tren- I dy. most of this works Bob llolmes has some hot guitar breaks and Trish ! Milliken has a decent, pleasurable voice. TIIOSK OK VOl who 1 showed up early to i R E M s concert at the Playpen last month were ' treated to a very promising opening act. the Dream Syndicate This Los 1 Angeles' band has just issued .its second album. Medicine Show iA&Mi. and while it lacks the intensity am rawness that makes .their debut a must , I » to own. I it's still a solid ' etfdrfi. Voqalist/writer/rhythm ' guitarist Steve Wynn is a j serious, yet unpredictable , Irontman who has been inspired by modern jazzmen. I as well as the obvious in- ; lluence of The Velvet t'nderground The true j star is quitarist Karl I'recoda. who just might be 1 the most original soloist in 1 rock today He's hot VISlwi.l.Y. England s ' Dead or Alive would like to I shock you as much as Boy 1 ( ieorge & Culture Club, but unlike t \ye i r fellow j Englishmen, these guys just don't cut it musically Sophisticated -Bourn Boom < Epic > is a horribly boring record The songs are cliche ridden, excessive, and directionless The playing and singing lack style or emotion Dead or Alive members should spend less time getting their hair fixed at the beau*ty parlor and more time I working on their music
