Festival Focus Is On Wildlife Artist
STONE HARBOR - A major rising star at thesecond New Jereey^Wings 'n Water Festival be wildlife artist Tom Hitata, who painted the first New Jersey duck stamp recent/ ly released by the state-f£>r sale to waterfowl hunters and collectors. He will appear in a special new Duck Stamp Exhibition at the Stone Harbor Borough Hall with an extensive and valuable federal duck stamp and print collection, ugiich will be on loan from a private owner, the first^ Garden State stamp will be sold and printijrders will also
be taken during the event. THE FESTIVAL, a benefit for the Wetlands Institute, will feature decoys and decorative bird carvings as well as guided nature walks, boat cruises, music of the sea. whaling history and other art work. Hirata, a native of New Jersey who lives in Ruthfcr- 1 ford, was a pre-med student. "But in a biological illustration class, I found my inspiration." he says. His •biology professor was breeding prairife and peregrine falcons, and Hirata became fascinated with the challenge of portraying these exciting birds., - HE ATTENDED the Arts Center College of Design in Los Angeles for commercial art training and the Arts Students League in New York City, a more classical art school He was a commercial illustrator for 2' 2 years in New York for Doubleday, Dell Books and others. He says the , Society of Animal Artists gave him more focus, and I he switched to wildlife ex-/ clusively by the end of 1982', "I am a realist. 1 can' > never get bored. There are / . so many things to see and \ \ learn. I went through ' Africa with open mouth and I must go back. I am looking forward to a trip to Alaska next year," beams Hirata. He explains that he spends a great deal of time in field research to observe the environment of birds and animals he paints. He was overwhelmed by the beauty of thousands of migratory geese at Brigantine, and takes , regular observation hikes through nearby Great Swamp and Long Island areas. THE FIRST New Jersey duck stamp artist won best of show at the 1982 Ducks Unlimited National Show. He has been a cover artist for Wildlife Art News, a gold room exat the world famous Md., Waterfowl Festival, and had his works shown in the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum's Natipnal Bird Art Tour at the Smithsonian Museum Washington, D C. last year. ' In addition to Hirata, a number of other wildlife artists will present their works at Stone Harbor dothe two-day festival, which features 45 events in the two southern shore counties of Cape May and Cumberland.
