Gas Co. Defends Rate Bid

• FOLSOM — Criticism pf the request for a $14.1 million rate increase by the South Jersey Gas Co. is "unjustified and unwar-

ranted", says William F. Ryan, gas company president. Ryan was responding to comments by the State

Department of the Pulbic Advocate on the plea for a . 5.6 percent increase. THE REQUEST was made, Ryan said, to recover the increased cost of the company's operations and of capital since February, 1963, end of the period on which the company's current rates are based. In the time since, he ^ent on, cost have increased because the company made investments to meet the needs of its customers. Consideration must also be given, he said, to the effects of inflation and higher interest rates, he went on. THE COMPANY has asked the Board of Public * Utilities to allow South Jersey Gas to earn on these additional investments and recover the increased expenses, Ryan declared. Besides, he said, the company is still not earning the rate of return authorized by the BPU*in May, 1983, date of the last rate increase. And, he added, South Jersey Gas has requested an increase in its base rates only three times since 1978.
