' Three regional teacher training laboratories are due to open in the fall. Affiliated with the regional curriculum services units in East Orange (North). East Brunswick (Central) and Sewell (South), the centers will offer a series of in-service workshops for teachers and administrative personnel. Subject areas will include computer awareness/literacy, computer applications in instruction and school administration, and hardware/software evaluation. The demonstration and training sites will be equipped with microcomputer hardware and a software library. A SECOND program provides all New Jersey school districts with free of cost technical information to aid in the evaluation and selection of microcomputer hardware/software. The Department of Education, "with the cooperation and support of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and the New Jersey School Boards Association, has arranged statewide subscriptions to EPIE « Educational Products Information Exchange) services. EPIE. a non-profit affiliate of the National Consumers Union, offers indepth analyses of available hardware and software packages, on-line access to the Compu-Serv database. ' newsletters, and information services AS PART OF the depart menfs urban initiative program. a pilot classroom laboratory project will operate in selected districts, focusing on computer aided instruction to improve basic skills, and fundamentals of computer literacy. The districts are East Orange. Trenton and Neptune. Classroom applica tions will be preceded by intensive training of par ticipating teachers The overall project will provide a working base for future wider utilization throughout the state. Department of Education services in the area of computer education are be ing developed by its new educational technology unit. The unit conducted the 1983 survey on "Educational Uses of Computers in New Jersey School Districts." and will publish its findings this fall. Another publication, an information resource entitled "Educational Computing in. New Jersey: A Resource Guide," is now being distributed to school districts The technology unit maintains an on-going information exchange statewide by means of its newsletters, and recently formed a feedback committee of "School Leaders in Educational Technology" ;
