Cape May County Health Department By LOUIS |. LAMANNA. Public Hcjlth ( oordin.Hor
In our continuing discussion of the County Health Department's Nursing Division we will examine the Family Planning services. Family Planning services were initiated in 1976 as a result of the department's survey of community health needs for our Fiveyear plan. The program is funded by a federal grant and the county freeholders. The services provided by the Family Planning unit include counseling, pregnancy testing, birth control methods, breast and pelvic exams, pap smears, urinalysis. Sickle Cell and Rubella screening and referrals as needed. Family Planning education is provided within the cliitic setting and in tnte community. \ O IN THE CJLINIC, patients receive orientation to clinic policies and procedures. The patient's rights and responsibilities are also explained. Education is provided on all methods of birth control, including the natural methods and counseling is provided on an individual basis for both men and women. The Family Planning unit also provides public education for the community upon request. For example: In order to assist families in dealing with difficulties in discussing sexuality with their children in the home, the family service has a film that is available to interested parents and groups. "A Family Talks About Sex" is an intelligent, gently amusing film that shows how a family discusses sex over a period of 15 years as children grow from infancy to college age. Many families are portrayed in a variety of situations. Delicate questions are bandied with sensitivity. The film shows how families learn how to communicate openly about matters which are of great importance to them all, but can be easily hidden away and remain undiscussed or misinterpreted. Staff members are available to present programs or to help schools and community groups present their own programs. In addition to films and films trips, speakers are available for your group to discuss such topics as: Anatomy and Physiology of Reproduction, Birth Control Methods, Menstruation to ■ Menopause, Men in Family Planning, Parents as Sex Educators, Adolescent Sexuality, Adolescent Pregnancy, Veneral Disease, Family Planning for Completed Families, and Communication — How to talk to your children about sex. Current information on sexuality is available in pamphlet and book form to interested persons. EXAMINATIONS are by appointment only. There is a walk-in clinic at the
department each Tuesday — on those days, there is no appointment needed for a fl exam. All our continuing clients should have an annual medical examination. The Family Planning program also provided an outreach clinic at the Wildwood Community Center on alternate Moodays. Our . Family Planning staff consists of a doctor and a nurse practitioner who provide the medical
care. A health educator and the counselors provide -health and family planning information. FEES FOR the clinic services depend upon the services rendered Counseling is a free service. A sliding scale method of payment exists for those who are unable to pay the full fee. In accordance with county policy, nomine is refused needed medical treatment because of inability to pay For more information about either clinical or educational services, or to make an appointment, call Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at 465-7911, Ext. 300.
