In a recent column I listed some of the excuses offered by those of us who want to avoid the responsibility of doing something about an excess weight pro1 blem Today I would like to explore in depth one of those excuses, "Blame" I'm sure all of us have at some time or other quoted I a proverb to explain or I justify our actions, i.e., "Waste not. want not '" and with that we polish off the leftover cheesecake Or. "God helps those who 1 help themselves!" and we ! proceed to help ourselves ' to the largest portion on the serving platter. SINCE EVERY maxim can be misinterpreted, we can easily find quotes to rationalize even the most bizarre' behavior. Those at 1 the opposite end of a' debate . can use the same principle ? to argue their point. £ This is strictly a human F trait. Members of the animal kingdom are not so cunning or clever When a hound loses the scent of the fox during the hunt, he doesn't stop to consider whose "fault" it is. Human do. Probably because we have developed a high degree of reasoning ability we have also encouraged hframe as its sidekick', thus we excuse our illogical actions. THIS IS TRUE with most of our weaknesses We overeat because of someone else's behavior. It is • the fault of that person He/she should change If you are letting this happen to you, then you are in trouble because someone else's behavior is controlling your life. Recently I met a woman who is vacationing here from out of state. Our conversation turned to food and then diets She said that she was having a problem — she could not stick to her usual eating pattern because of her daughter-in-law who was staying with her for two weeks ALTHOUGH SHE had been a "good" daughter-in-law for 20 years, she just wouldn't cooperate in the food planning and pre para tion and this was playing

havoc with the woman's regular eating habits She had been eating far too much of the wrong kind , of food. The daughter-in-law was completely to blame This conclusion seemed perfectly logical to < her We can see much more > clearly when we are not 1 personally affected. As anger and resentment built up within us the reasoning i power we normally possess takes leave. Mealtimes with this ' vacationing family have become such a disaster that they had to divide to conquer the ordeal. The} ] set up separate mealtim.-s * THAT WAS one answer to their immediate pro- i blem but more soul searching is needed to get them I over the next hurdle. Fault- j finding and placing blame is sometimes so deep- I seated that it takes a lot of | digging to unearth the ' cause. If you can bring the problem to the surface, you can deal with it much more . effectively. And as a result, the entire family will , benefit. This is part of } growth — change versus / escape, resolving a pro- I blem instead of allowing it t to do harm * If you need help getting * started with a diet pro- * gram, write Ruth A | Wanberg. c/o of this ^ newspaper.
