Seven Mile Beach News Notes
From Page 7) Audfy S. Hardy. Wl« WENT TO our first socia"r event at Avalon Yacht Club Sunday, Aug. 12, a<= members. It was the official welcome to new members night and we enjoyed it enormously. Among members of long staring who greeted us we metJHay Farrell, Peg and Fre* Herbert, who love Eng/^nd as much as we an<^f own that divine key Pol d nouse just a few hour «s from the club. It wasn't until we raved aboo the house that Fred admitted he was the architect. We met Nancy Hudanich. the commodore's wife, for the first tirm- — as one might expect she is charming. Ch^Tnan of the Board DaYs Pearson and his wife Pri'Orilla also went out of the' way to welcome us. Vice Commodore Larry Ma^'»r told us that they had gained 80 new members in this past year and lost abo it 10 to attrition. That's a damned good average and ma' es us even happier we joined. fletty and Bill Ec^flmeyer of Denver. Colo. have been summering in Stone Harbor for 10 years and they love it They have several friends who have had wonderful vacations by exchanging homes with people who live in England and want a bit of a look-see over here don't you know? Sometimes they have relatives who live near Denver. Anyway, the Echelmeyers would love to visit this part of the world during the period from Nov. 1 to Dec. 15 and would love to exchange homes with, someone down here for a short time. We asked
* Bill what Colorado is like at that time of year and he said, "Ideal. No lawns to mow, no leaves to rake and no snow." The average daily temperature is 55 to 65 degrees, dropping to 25 at night. If you'd like a change of scene for approximately the same length of time, write Bill at 8695 Newland Ave., Denver, and exchange references and photos. At this moment our outside thermometer registers 90 degrees — we're going up to start packing WE'LL GET news even if we have to make it ourselves but preferably not this way again ever! On Aug. 11 we were headed for Andre's Beauty Salon and the traffic was ghastly We finally saw a man pulling put of a parking place and headed slowly into the diagonal vacant space We put our foot on the break — almost through the floor — and the car kept rolling over the curb, over the safety barrier in the parking lot and hit a 1981 Mazda head on. Ninety Sixth St was $warming with pedestrians and the thought that I might have pinned one or more almost put us in shock. Four onlookers rushed to see if I had been hurt, two women and two men. Bill Allen oi 95th Street ran to Seashore Home Supply to tell our husband. One man very kindly called the police for me and James C. Myford, an aluminum scupltor from Grove City, stayed with me for moral support until the police arrived. The first of two police vehicles to arrive was driven by Patrolman Weiland, whom we know.
He helped me find all the cards they needed and was most reassuring. Two Angels from Heaver and Glenmore, Pa.. Joan Ridings and Donna Kinn, walked me to the hairdresser's and explained to Ute Young, who tries to make a silk purse out of me weekly, that I needed tender loving care more than a hairdo for a while. To all the people who were so supportive I send endless gratitude Tomorrow I'll go to church and thank God there were no pedrestrians in front of me. The police and my husband both tested the car and pronounced it perfectly safe to drive. When my spouse arrived with the good news that the brakes were really okay and that he'd meet me at home at six, I really went into a fury and screeched "Are you crazy? I'll never drive that car again!" He said patiently, "Okay, I'll take it over the Exxon and get it checked." There is some justice — he got to the station safely, applied the brakes and the car wouldn't stop until he shifted it to park. Then I got some action. The postscript is that the master cylinder on the brakes needed replacement and it has suddenly become my husbands car. I shudder to took at it, let alone drive it. The Avalon Volunteer Rescue Squad welcomes everyone to a benefit antique show it will sponsor 10 a.m. -6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, in the Avalon Community Hall. The hall, at 30th and the Beach, is air conditioned, there is plenty of free parking, and the cause is a good one.
