Wildflowei s Are Program Subject

WEST CAPE MAY - The Cape May Geographic Society's slide program, entitled "Wildflowers of the Northwest" will be presented by Gil Cavileer 8:30 p.m tomorrow at the Municipal Building on Broadway

Cavileer is one of Cape May County's foremost ^ botanists He has led wildf lower walks or workshops for the Cape f May Geographic Society and the Wetlands Institute ) Gil is also an all-around naturalist and in this pro i j

gram will present an overall impression of the Pacific Northwest, the fruit of four trips he has made to the northwest It will highlight western Washington, Oregon, northwestern California, and the northwest corner of Nevade. CAVILEER HAS studied and enjoyed the natural world all his life, staring at the age of 12 when he subscribed to Nature Magazine and has con tinued despite interruptions like school, the army, and work. For 20 years Cavileer was a bird bander in New Jersey ; he was involved in "Operation Recovery" in the early 1960 s. He worked for the Conservation Corps at age 23 as a "smoke

chaser" in the forested mountains of the Idaho panhandle at the Coeur D'Alene National Forest. For 30 years Cavileer earned his living as a boat builder, clam digger, and fisherman in Port Republic, in the heart of the Pine Barrens. NOW LIVING in Cape May County, Cavileer is an active botanist and conservationist in the area His latest ongoing project is to complete a "plant list" for The Nature Conservancy's Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge at South Cape May Meadows. Admission to the program is free to members of the Geographic Society Non-members are invited to attend for a nominal donation.

Purists scoffed at its non-conformist categories such as "Best Left Arm Tan" for the driver who never gets to the beach but is able to dangle his or her left arm from the car window.
