CHRISTINE (Warner Brothers) "R" Although Stephen King's novels are best sellers, the films based on his works have been — with the exception of Carrie — box office flops. Most of these movies deserved to fail, as they didn't oorae close to equaling the chills and exciteIment this horror novelist is known for. Christine is the exception, as it's a solid work that is consistently tense. The^credit has to go to Director John Carpenter, who took King's basic story of a car possessed by an evil spirit, and made it plausible. He also got s teller performances from his cast, especially the talented Keith Gordon. Christine might not match Carpenter's Escape From New York, The Thing, or Halloween, but for mainstream horror it works pxtremely well. BASKET CASE (Media) "R" This low-budget inI dependently made horror film was a huge hit both on the drive-in circuit and with the New York "art" crowd. While many might be turned off by its gore, it does have one of the mo6t original plots the genre has ever seen. * The main character is a young man who has moved into a cheap New York hotel. No matter where he goes he carries a large wicker basket that has his frous Siamese twin inside. They were :ed against their and the two have to seek revenge the doctors who did Basket Case has a lot to offer, as it has plenty of special effects, scares, and humorous characters that give this a black comedy edge — not unlike Little Shop of Horrors or Bucket of Blood Horror fans should be pleased. THE MIRROR CRACK 'D (Thorn EMI) "PG" This Agatha Christie mystery features an allstar cast, including Rock Hedson, Kim Novak. Aagela Lanshury.

Geraldine Chaplin, and Elizabeth Taylor. What makes it even better is the taut script which is full of misleading clues and surprises. Agatha Christie's stories often adapt well to the whims of filmmakers and The Mirror Crack'd is no exception ) Fun for the entire family/ REPO MAN (Pacific Arts) "R" Here's a wonderfully absurd little film that is hard to pin down. It deals with aliens coming to earth, street punks, rock and roll, violent action, police chases, and, from which it gets its title, repossessing cars. All this is served up with j dialogue that's often humorous and in conflict i with the action that's on the j screen. The only problem recommending Repo Man j is that I've got a hunch most will find it more con- ' fusing than enjoyable. Those who do check it out, will discover a movie that's definitely one of a kind. It's just nice to see a film that isn't afraid to take some chances P.M.
