■ Boardwalk Revues Keep Up Tradition .
CAPE MAY - The Board I walk Revi»es which have been drawing standing-room-only crowds to Convention Hall Tuesday I nights span the generations, ac several of the per formers are the childre»of I yesterday's participants! The show itself carries out a tradition of evening entertainment and dancing I dating back to 1928. The current Boardwalk Revue is now in its 13th season I under the direction of Joanne Reagan, with the cooperation of the city. MS. REAGAN began the I Boardwalk Revues in 1970, modeled somewhat after the Friday night "Kiddie Shows ' ' tjha t were ■ presented when she was a youngster in Cape May. The last season of "Kiddie shows" (a revue of talented youngsters) was
m 1961 under the direction of Jerry I-ove Barber The *reat March storm of 1962 washed away Convention Hall and the Friday night Kiddie Shows were discontinued Evening entertainment with dancing goes back to 1998 under the direction of Walter Griffins. Attempts, starting in that year, to charge admission (first a quarter, lat#r a nickel) were turned down by the city and the city commission. There is still no charge for the review and dances. THE ORIGINAL Kiddie Show consisted of a halfhour review of talented youngsters, followed by dancing for the adults. "Ballin' the Jack,", the "Mexican Hat Dance", and the "Bunny Hop" were among the numbers performed Dy the youngsters.
The Clarence Furhmann Orchestra accompanied the review and provided music for .dancing. Madeline and Fred England followed Griffins as they took over direction of the reviews for almost 10 years. The Kiddie Show continued to be a weekly summer highlight under the direction of Jerry Love Barber for approximately 20 years. JERRY BARBER and Madeline England are the daughters of the late Halsey Love, a veteran of show business. They are also sisters of the late Ludy Love, a composer and musician. Ms. Reagan performed with Mrs. Barber in the 50s and into the 60s. Now her daughter lists 10 years of Boardwalk Revue performances and her son lists one year. Mrs. Bettie Sheehan, formerly Dottie Elwell, danced for over 10 years \ with Mrs. Barber's "kiddie i Shows". Her daughter has had five years with the Boardwalk Revue. Ms. Stina Hemingway danced with the Boardwalk Revue since 1970. Her 5-year-old daughter is a veteran of two years with the Revue.
FEATURED IN the revues recently have been Kristy Coombs, star of "Annie", "Marilyn, An American Fable", and "Kicks". Also making appearances „ were Sydney Weeks and Arlene Kul us, also of "Annie". The children who perform are members of Reagan Dance Studio performing troupes, the Mini Company, the Apprentice, and the Joanne Reagan Dancers Their repertoire is learned during the winter and spring. The curtain rises at Convention Hall 8:15 p.m. every Tuesday. Admission is free. Tiro Receive FT) Li Degrees OCEAN CITY - Two \ local residents were .awarded degrees at the AlsL annual commencement of Fairleigh Dickinson University, observed in three campus ceremonies. They are: Kurt Lawn, who received a Bachelor of Science degree ; Lynne Kresge, who was awarded her Master of Arts.
