Recreation Staff Praised
AVALON — The work of the borough recreation staff this summer has# drawn the praise of thr borough council and the recreation committee. - — "This staff has many and varied activities for all ages the year around, but an especially active program for the summer," commented Councilwoiftan Pauline Petri ca. THE SUMMER activities have included hand / crafts, tennis (tournaments for all ages),
swimming instruction, baseball, dances, antique > shows, fashion shows, summer Halloween parade, hobie cat races, sand sculpture contests. There have been bike and trike races, street runs, and volleyball games. "All of this requires a large well rounded staff who are dedicated to the job and his staff is certainly well qualified, " Pa trica noted. The staff members are; Director of Recreation
Dave Haberle, a graduate of Penn State University with a B.S. in Recreation and Parks. Dave has been Avalon's director for over 4-1/2 years. THE TENNIS director is Doreen Drexel. who has been on the Avalon staff for 10 years and has a B.S. and Master's degree in Health and Physical Education from Frosberg State College. In the fall she will assume duties at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. Returning staff members are Mary Hogan, a student at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis.; Terry Foley of Avalon, on staff five years, and a Tot Shop instructor during the offseason; Lisa Petrica, who assists at the Tennis Courts, and Fred Bock, who is the soccer and basketball coordinator and Margaret Wilson, the gymnastic co-ordinator New on the recreation staff this year are Janice Russo, a special education teacher with the North Penn School District; Chery Latshaw, who is a physical education major at Westchester University, and Rob Penna, a student at Achmere Academy in Claymon, Del. "Avalon is fortunate to have people who give so much of themselves and their time," concluded Mrs. Petrica. Good Start CAPE MAY - Regular season champion Vance's Sluggers drew first blood in their series with Middle Township Recreation as they won the first game 5 to 3. Myra Valeatine was the offensive star for the sluggers as she launched a home run to power her team to victory. Vance's Debbie Alexander also / turned in a masterful pit? - ching performance. / / I
