on the mark * by Mark Msttern 'i * O.C. Lifeguards Grab Title by a Point

It went right down to the wire. At' the South Jersey lifeguard Championships. Ocean City and Margate battled to the last race before Ocean City took the 44lh edition by a single point Ocean City won the event

for the second year in a row with a' first in the doubles row. a second in the singles, and a fifth in the swint Ron Kirk and Tom Stephanik captured the doubles row rather easily by more than 13 seconds

] With tne victory. Kirk Wo?; ; his third South Jersey fit! (J in the event. Tom Morrison gave Ocean City important points in the singles, finishing second by just one second NOT TO BE overlooked was the fifth place taken b> Lee DiPrizito. DiPrizito' finish gave O.C. the onepoint that provided the margin of victory. Other local guards with high finishes included a second by Doug Meyers in the swim and North Wiidwood's Tom Palmer, a third place winner in the singles row. The team standings look like this : Ocean City in first with 10 points followed by Margate at 9, Atlantic City third with 8, Brigantine and/ Avalon tied for fifth with 4 points. North Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and Cape May finished further down the list. As a warm-up for the South Jersey Tournament, Ocean City earlier took the two-day Dutch Hoffman event in Wildwood. Again it was Kirk and Stephanik along with Morrison leading the way. each taking a first place finish. THE 38TH ANNUAL Harvey Lake men's tennis tournament was held n Ocean City last week and a Virginia man walked awry with the title. Eric Lenz if Amherst took the top pr~e mmammmmmmmmmmmmmm

by downing Michael Rouse of Haverford, Pa Lenz became champion with a final 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory. The two-week tourney had 34 participants this year. Don Barton of Ocean City is now the proud owner of half of a Jersey Devil Gassic title. Barton teamed with Bill Seward of Margate to win the men's "A" doubles tennis title. Barton and Seward downed Peter Demos and Dave Walcott in the finals 6-3 and 6-2. Walcott is also from Ocean City. r The four-week competition took place at the Golf and Tennis World fn Egg Harbor Township. REMARKS: Did you hear that the Philadelphia Stars might move the team to Baltimore if the U.S.F.L. decides to play fall ball? First of all, I think it would be the end of the two-year league if they went up against the N.F.L. Too many devoted football fans would completely ignore the U.S.F.L. when the N.F.L. and college teams are in action. They don't get enough support in the spring. The Eagles continue to

impress with their first squad in the line-up. In the pre-season so far, the Birds have lost close games after leading early on. Things just have to be better than last year Now to baseball. The beanball has found its way into the divisional races in the National League The war in Atlanta the other week was unreal. THE UMPIRES need and should get more power to deal with this cheao way of getting even with the opposition. That battle started with the first batter and ended ir. the ninth with 13 ejections and five fan arrests. I think the umps should forfeit the game to the opposing team if the game gets that far gone Three times. San Diego pitchers tried "to hit Pascual Perez, one pitch just missing the Atlanta pitcher's head. When will the rules change ? Probably when someone gets killed. What will happen then? Will the pitcher be brought up on murder charges0 I think it would be first degFee because it would be premeditated murder. BASEBALL SHOULD rule with a stronger hand when it comes to these beanball wars If a player is ejected for throwing at another player, increase the fines and suspensions What is a $500 fine going to do to a man making a million dollars a year0 Each time a player is beaned his career and income could possibly end right there Just think if I came to the place of your employ and injured you to an extent that you could never work again I would end up in jail The baseball field, jiockey rink and other sports arenas seem to be the place to be if you want to break the law . Clamshell Pitching Test Set CAPE MAY - One of the area's, if not the nation's, most unusual sporting events occurs Saturday and Sunday here This year, as for the past 40, the International Clamshell Pitching Gub of Cape May will hold its open championships Commencing at 10 a.m. on Stegar's Beach, the competition will be held in Men's and Women's Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. Entrance fee for the two-day event is $1 . THE GAME itself is quite simple, somewhat a combination of quoits and horseshoes. Two holes are dug in the hard sand, (after the tide has ebbed) and, at a distance of 25 feet 6 inch contestants try to toss their shells into or near the hole Scoring is as in horseshoes, except that "toppers" cancel out. Gub President Richard Reinhart of Richboro, Bucks County, advises that the game is not to be confused with the professionalism of horseshoes. Whereas the recent championships produced a ringer percentage of 93.7 percent, Reinhart says that on a good day a .first-rate clamshell pitcher might hit 40 percent. Proving, he says, what an easy game horseshoes actually is. Trophies are awarded to all winners. Reports: Blue chumming action has picked up at night with lots of fish hitting the scales at 15 to 18 lbs. along with good numbers from five to 15 lb. It is the best bluefishing in j weeks for the chummers as j well as the daytime trolling boats. j
