dspartmit and Rutgers University, which conduct a mosquito surveillance program, are checking traps for disease carrying mosquitos. State Health Commissioner Dr. J. Rfchan} Goldstein said perin mosquito-infested areas would be wise to wear repellent to reduce the risk of being bitten. In addition, pans, cans and other outdoor recq>tades such as tires should be kept empty, since mosquitos can breed in even small amounts of water, according to Dr. Sidney R. Nusbaum, director of the agriculture department's Division of Animal Health.
Eastern Equine Encephalitis is caused by a virus which produces an tnflamatian of the brain in both humans and horses. It is fatal in SO percent of the human cases, and almost always fatal in horses. Humans who survive the illness are often brain damaged. IN HORSES, symptoms include erratic behavior, incoordination, and unwillingneps to move. Symptoms are accompanied by fever and last only two to three days. There is no treatment, so the animals dies or is put to sleep. * In humans, symptoms include fever, severe headache and stiff neck for s few days to a week.
followed by an altered state stem, paralysis or coma. Humana, like horses can get the disease only from mosquitoes. It is not transmissible from person to person or from horse to horse. Six horses died from the disease in 1982, and five died last year. There were no human cases reported in 1982 or 1983, and nooe has been reported to date. The largest human outbreak of EEE in New Jersey occured in 1959 when 22 of 32 cases died from the disease. Since then, only occasional outbreaks have been reported, involving three to 12 persona. 0

Boating jflffisjlh Safety by jotw^MTvoin
Having your boat examined free by the Coast Guard Auxiliary could save your life. Having the necessary equipment to save your life aboard your boat in the time of need improves you and your passengers chAnces of survival. This would include a PFD (life jacket) for each person plus one throwable device. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteers have been taught to examine your craft for safety, to see if the boat meets federal and state laws, plus safety equipment recommended by the auxiliary to help save your life. WHEN YOU receive this free courtesy marine examination and you pass, the Coast Guard Auxiliary's "Seal of Safety" decal is applied to your boat. It lets the law enforcement officers know that your boat meets their standards
If your craft toils the examination, no citation is issued. However, you are given a check-sheet so that you can equip your boat to qualify for the Seal of Safety decal. If you wish to have your boat examined, contact Russel Lincoln, 886-3285, vessel examination officer for Flotilla 82, Coast Guard Auxiliary
