Shellfish Industry Expansion Mapped
TRENTON — The state departments of agriculture and environmental protection will join forces in an effort to expand the state's $4 million shellfish industry State Secretary of Agriculture Arthur R. Brown Jr. and DEP Commissioner Robert Hughey agreed this week to meet with representatives of the shellfish industry to determine the most pressing needs of the industry and its more than 2,200 fishermen. "THERE IS tremendous potential for expansion of the shellfish industry,'' said Brown, "and both agriculture and DEP can, and should, do whatever possible to promote its development." The departments will cooperate with the New Jersey Farm Bureau in the expansion effort, he added. Nearly one million pounds of clams and oysters are harvested each year in New Jersey bays {J and estuaries, according to Hughey He said more clams would be available for harvesting with increased use of depuration, construction of clam hat- y cheries and water clean-up projects. "IN ADDITION to en couraging industry par-
ticipation and guidance, 'he departments also will be acting on the recommendations of the Coastal Bay Clam Resources Task Force," said Hughey Created by a resolution sponsored by Ocean County Assemblyman John Hendrickson, the task force is expected to submit a list of recommendations on industry expansion to Governor Kean by the end of 1964. ■$1.2 Million Receives O.K.
