Slews Notes from Lower Township y E. J. Duffy 465-5055
TOWNSHIP COUNCIL is expected to decide this week when it will schedule a special meeting to discuss councilmen's salaries. Slated for discussion during council's work session last week, talks were postponed because of Mayor Robert Fothergill's absence. He has recommended formation of a salary committee, charged with proposing pay for the five councilmen. Fothergill was supposed to return from Michigan on Monday. SINCE NEXT MONDAY is Labor Day, council's first meetings in September will be held Wednesday with a work session at 6 p.m. and a regular meeting at 8 p.m. • • • AT LAST WEEK'S > regular meeting, council adopted Resolution 84-51A, authorizing the transfer of $5,000 in Revenue Sharing funds for gypsy moth spraying to the Lower Township Resuce Squad. The township regularly contributes $25,000 to the squad and customarily
donates another $25,000 in emergency appropriations. The transferred money is a portion of that appropriation. Asked if that would be all the squad receives from the township this year. Township Manager James R. Stump said last Wednes1 V ■ UlUlIip OUJU IUJI flUUIIVO
day, "No. We're giving them $5,000; by New Jersey budget law we can't . give them any more until / later this year. " / / COUNCIL ALSO ADOPTED Resolution 84-50A last week, approving municipal cleanup of i three lots and the placement of liens against those properties to pay for the work. NO STOPPING OR strnding" will be allowed along Route 109 between Route 9 and the Cape May city limits, according to Resolution 84-47A which council also adopted last week. BY ADOPTING Resolu tion 84-48A, council approved the purchase of a used garbage thick during the Aug. 20 meeting. Stump said last Wednesday that the truck cost $25,000 It's a 1976 Volvo with-a^rebuilt engine and other overhauled parts, he added. \ ROSEMARY FERRIS of Cape May Beach told council last week that Bay Drive has become a drag strip, at least in part because no speed limits have been posted along it. She said a trecherous southbound curve near Cox T(all Creek should be marked and barriers installed cross the creek 'before omebody gets killed. " Even if unposted, drivers should know the residential streets have speed limits of 25 miles per hour, Deputy Mayor Joseph Davis replied. But. said Ferris. "I don t think it would stand up in court without a sign." "I will meet with you . this week and put it to •est," Stump told her Davis and Stump said Friday that speed limit
signs have been posted along Bay Drive and overgrown curve signs cleared. Barriers, to protect motorists from driving into the creek, are being considered, said Councilman Joseph Lonergan, who reported that Ferris
seemed pleased with the initial results. ! • • • ELEANOR GRUBB of East Miami Avenue thank ed Councilman Robert Conroy last week for getting "some attention" for her I street. The roadway was I scrapped and potholes fill- » ed, she noted. Stump told the audience ; at last week's council ! meeting that he expected to finalize the township road program by last Saturday ; (Page 17 Please)
