Acts To Halt Casino Laundering

I WASHINGTON. DC - j Crine Subcommittee Cha rman Bill Hughes' (DNJ) efforts to curb the Jaurdering of drug money through casinos is one step closer to completion, following formal announcement of proposed federal regulations to close loopholes in federal law wh ch have facilitated laundering of illegal drug profits through casinos. "Drug traffickers obtain large sums of money in I sm-nll denominations. They try to convert their illegal profits to checks or other monetary instruments, without drawing the attention of law enforcement authorities. To deter money laundering. Congress passed the Bank Secrecy Act which requires financial institutions to file /reports for cash transactions in excess of $10,000. However, casinos have not been considered 'financial institutions' under the Act," Hughes said. At Hughes' urging, the U.S. Department of Treasury today published a proposal in the Federal Register to include casinos within the definition of "financial institutions' .
