V SWAINTON - The counM ty MUA has awarded a J $9,361,970 contract for the construction of force mams in the Seven Mile/Middle Region to low bidder, R*J. Lcngo Construction Co. of t*fj Dennisville ■J The contract was awarded at a special meeting of MUA Commissioners to review bids for the regions tfv force mains and pumping 3« stations last week. According to MUA Chief Engineer Charles Norkis. _ the Longo Co s bid was the lowest of 13 submitted The bids ranged up to $13 million. WE RE VERY PLEASED with the amount of this contract,-' Norkis said | | "The bidding was com- ■ petitive, and the low bid t was $3.6 million less than _ our engineers' estimates." The force main contract lis for approximately six miles of pipeline to be instilled in Sea Isle City, Avalon and Stone Harbor The new lines will connect with existing sewage treatIrrent plants imjhe municipalities and divert e'fluent from the back bays tc an ocean outfall off 30th s'reet, Avalon. Norkis said the construe t'on work could begin in bte September, or early October. The first phase in- ] volves crossing Townsends Inlet between Avalon and Sna Isle City with pipeline NORKIS SAID STREET openings, are p anned until later ui the fall and that the municipalities involved v ould be informed of all (instruction plans in advance so that the work could be accomplished with the least amount of disruption. The MUA's contract with the Longo Co prohibits any " ork being done on city r "reels from the Friday cfore Memorial Day until he Friday after Labor Day

next year and in 1986. The first phase of the Seven Mile region construction is expected to be completed no later than September 1986. Although the authority also reviewed bids for the pumping stations for the Seven Mile/ Middle Region, no contract was awarded pending the results of a hearing with bidders Sept. 5. According to Norkis, ir-

regularities were found in the bids of both the first and second lowest bidders on the contracts. "Our attorneys are evaluating the impact of these irregularities on the bids and will hear from the two bidders Sept. 5," he said. "Following this hear ing, our attorneys will make a specific recom mendation and we will proceed from there."
