Engineers Tracing Ocean City Odors v

SWAINTON - A preliminary study by engineers reviewing the continuing odor problems at the Ocean City wastewater treatment facilities has targeted several areas of the plant as potential odor sources. Gary Kroll of the engineering firm of Camp, Dresser and McKee, told the commissioners of the County Municipal Utilities Authority Aug 15 that onsite inspections would be available in several weeks following fu-ther study ■•WE WANT the residents of Ocean City to know Lhat we art anxious to discover tne source of the offending odors and to eliminate the problem as quickly as possible." said George Marinakis. executive director Currently, the MUA is awaiting the arrival of air injection equipment which will be installed in the line at 32nd Street According to Charles Norkis, MUA chief engineer, the equipment which introduces air and ozone into the line is expected to eliminate some of the odor causing problems. "We've hid some problems acquiring the equipment, but it is due to arrive this week." Norkis reported, noting that it would be installed as soon as it arrives HOWEVER. KROLL S said his preliminary findings indicate tjiat covering the channels at the treatment plant may further reduce the annoying odors. "We could eover the channels with checkered plate, collect the air at several points and then treat that air before it is released." Kroll indicated the engineers were also studying the primary clarifiers, thickeners and the final clarifier as possible odor sources We will complete our study, prioritize the problem areas and make recommendations." MUA Commissioner Roy Gillian who resides in Ocean City, expressed concern that the disposal of septage from throughout the county at the Ocean City wastewater treatment plant might be an odorcausing factor He questioned the MUA staff to determine if some

of the county's septic waste could be redirected to the Cape May wastewater treatment plant. MARINAKIS SAID facilities currently do not exist at the Cape May plant to accept septage, but add ed that the -staff would study the feasibility and costs of providing these facilities at the plant and report the results to the commissioners. He also noted that the regional plant for the Seven Mile Beach/Middle region has been designed to accept all the septage from the county. "If we can at lease redirect some of the septage to Cape May and alleviate the burden on the Ocean City plant in the interim, 1 think it would be very helpful," Gillian said. In other action. Marinakis reported that the authority had contacted the seven Cape May County municipalities in which future wastewater facility construction would occur THE MlIA requested that meetings be scheduled with the governing body for each municipality for a presentation regarding im pending cons true tiorvWork Construction pf two wastewater treatment plants i Wildwood/Lower and Sevdn/Mile Middle regional facilities), eight 'pumping stations, two ocean outfalls and miles of force mains will begin in September, Marinakis said. Topics to be discussed with the elected officials include road openings, traffic control and communication and complaint procedures Municipalities contacted by the MUA include Wildwood Crest, Lower Township, Middle Township, North Wildwood, Sea Isle City, Stone Harbor, West Wildwood and Wildwood
