By Charles Lamey After a couple of dull, uninspired albums. Nick Lowe has returned with a strong, consistent effort in All New Material (Columbia). Lowe's strongpoint here is his songwriting. where he blends a clever use of lyrics with simple, yet gripping melodies. Add to that his uncluttered arrangements and countrytinged vocals and one wishes he could come up with more gems like this j In the past. Lowe always seemed to take the attitude ! his job was to produce others ( most notably Elvis Costello) and his own recording career was a hobby AH New- Material indicates just the opposite, as it's obvious a lot of care was put into this. Now. let's hope Nick Lowe can get ;. back on the charts. In the late, 60 s. early 70's one of the most popular bands in rock had to be the Los Angeles based Spirit Spirit of '84 < Mercury) is a reunion of the original lineup (other versions of the group continued into the 80s). It's a pleasant enough record-which should win back old Spirit fans through nostalgia alone - yet there are too many remakes that pale to the original versions and there doesn't seem to be much enthusiasm in the StiUr*ifT~nice to see a guitarist the calibre of Randy California getting to strut his stuff again in public I hope they do a second album, as it would be nice to see what kind of new material Spirit would come up with. AS*it is. the failure of this album is the fact the group wanted only to relive past glories, instead of building on their credible foundation George Jones is one of country' music's most con troversial sons But. staying away from the wild stones that have always surrounded him, he's made ^ some of the purest, most emotional music in the genre Heartaches & Hangovers i Rounder. One Camp St., Cambridge Mass, 02140) collects some sides he cut for the Musicor label bet ween 1965-71. The sound is raw. honest, and pas sionate, with Jones' heartfelt voice overwhelming the listener Despite the fact the bulk of these tracs weren't hits, but in many cases songs from now forgotten albums, this collection will win over even non-country fans AARP Meet SEA ISLE CITY - Chapter 71, American Association of Retired Per sons, will meet 1 pm Thursday, Sept 13, at the Townsend Inlet Civic Center. Guest speaker will be Dr Paul Remer, eye specialist *
