Wetlands Focus on •» Mammals STONE HARBOR - The little wild creatures who enjoy the region's marshes. fields and forests will be the focus of "Small Mammals of South Jersey," an illustrated lecture Saturday, Sept 8 , at the Wetlands Institute. Dr Michael Geller, associate professor of Environmental Studies and Biology' at Stockton State College, will present his show at 8:15 p.m. in the Marsh view Lecture Hall. Some of the animals to be featured are the moles, flying squirrels, pine and meadow voles, rare bog lemmings and white footed mice. •£. "MOST LOCAL people never get to see a flying squirrel although they are quke common in these parts They are night creatures. " explains Geller He plans 40 briMsome — study skins jofftying squir rels. weasels, shrews, moles and other rodents for | the audiences to examine "We are currently in a population high for these small animals." says Geller. "We know why population goes down, but we are not sure of exactly why it reaches such heights, although we are sure weather and food are responsible. " AFTER COMPLETING his bachelor s degree at the University of Connecticut, Geller received his doctorate from the State University of New York at Binghamton. where he studied mammal populatwto and stress. His disseration was on the meadow vole. Science careers ran in the family, according to Geller. and he began to study wildlife through microscopes as a pre-teen. He and his wife IIza, who is a biologist, live in Sweetwater at Hammooton His lecture will be one of two scheduled in September at the Wetlands Institute which offers a Weliandia museum, observation tower, nature bookshop and salt marsh trail open from 10 to 4:30, Tuesdays through Saturdays.
