State Finally Gets Point Park Title

CAPE MAY POINT - The National Park Service has turned over ownership

of 132.9 acres in Lower Township to the state of New Jersey as part of Cape

May Point State Park The property was once a naval communications station and coastal artillery emplacement. It was transferred to the state in 1964 under the Surplus Property Act of 1949 for public park and recreational use for 533,000, 50 percent of the then-market value THE QUIT-CLAIM deed called for the National Park Service to monitor the recreational use of the transferred land for 20 years The Department of Environmental Protections final report has now been submitted and accepted by the Mid- Atlantic Regional Office of the Park Service and the property now belongs to the state of New Jersey

In the past 20 years, New Jersey has converted buildings into a visitor's interpretive center and other supporting facilities, developed interpretive and hiking trails on boardwalks and built observation platforms and picnic pavilions. Facilities have been adapted to handicapped visitors The stale has future plans for beach swimming and to make use of a concrete artillery bunker that stands on pilings at the water's edge
