Dear Ruth: Please get me started on a diet program. 1 need to lose more than 20 pounds. Need Help Getting Started, Town Bank. Dear Ruth: Please send me some of your diet tips I need to lose 2o to 30 pounds and anything you send will be a good start. Need Help Getting Started, Villas. Dear NHGS, Town Bank and Villas: Since your letters are similar, my answer will cover the two letters. Both of you have -alre&dy made your own "start"' You have recognized a need, set a reasonable goal and' have asked for help meeting that goal THIS CAN BE a humbling experience for some but it is part of a deeper attitude change whereby we want to get out of our own way and begin to live. Taking off 20 or 30 pounds doesn't require deprivation. nor is it an excessive struggle It may not be quite as easy as we'd like: nothing is But when you are willing and eager, it works! Ho\Cevkr. before you begin, stop fona moment and try to analyze how this extra 20-30 poinds happened We leim much from our mistakes and though we may SA}' we want to be nd of thje excess fat, we may ✓^t*rma>nsciously using it as / a "security blanket", a protection of sorts. - IT MAY represenk rebellion or some other abstract symbol. It may be a weapon to punish ourselves or someone else While this may sound far out. and may not apply in these two instances, this type of attitude does exist. _ So it is wise to examine the reasons why you are overweight If there are no deep-seated causes, get on with your new program There is no reason why you cannot succeed. As President Kennedy once said "W:e should not let our fears hold us back _ from pursuing our hopes" NOW FOR SOME diet ideas Nutritionists claim that a person who eats a moderate selection from i
the Four Basic Foods group each day will be properly nourished. This i§. very important when we plan to reduce our food intake. Those four basic groups are: 1. Meat, fish and poultry; 2. Dairy products. 3. Cereals and breads; and 4. Fruits and vegetables. . It is amazing to learn that in this country of superabundance many people are malnourished — not because of lack of money, but because they lack the understanding of what food our bodies require. THERE IS a tendency to eat what we like and sweets and starches are at the top of the list. Poor diets 'account for many problems, including obesity, skin problems, irritability and lack of energy Select a variety of foods from the four groups. Avoid too much of any one group i no lop-sided plans > . In the bread and cereal group you might try some of the whole grain breads They are more filling than white bread and their coarse texture is quite satisfying~j^_ — - — — " Make-up a food chart designating the type and quantity you will be serving yourself at your meals From this chart, make up a menu for each day and tape it on the fridge door. It will be a reminder in case you forget M IF YOU NEED addi tional help and you have an understanding friend you feel comfortable with, call her/him and relate your daily menu Having someone else in on your plan helps to shore up yor will ■ power Above all. be honest with yourself Take in adequate nourishment and stay Away from "junk" food 1 Good luck to both of you and keep me appraised of j your progress.
