Cape May County Health Department News ' By LOUIS |. LAftlANNA, Public Health Coordinator
This week I am going to interrupt our discussion of the day to day services of the Health Department to talk about one of the major health topics of today, STRESS, and to tell you about a Seminar entitled "Eight Days to Resolving ^ Stress" which will be held at the CoujHy Health Department, evenings, beginning Sept 10. Kenneth T. Pelletier wrote in "Mind as a Healer Mind as Slayer" that "In the past 100 years there has been a dramatic shift in human disease In 1 the more technically advanced cultures, stressrelated disorders have replaced communicable diseases as the primary killers of human life One estimate claims that stress-related disorders now total 50-80% of all diseases "At one time, epidemics of small pox or malaria were the ma joc_ medical proble ,s. But todly. heart ailments are among the most common /killers - stress a major factor - though not necessarily the only one ' ' / ^/TfttmroWTH of stress related -diseases .reflects the high powered," fast paced society in which we live This stress-filled environment demands that we develop an ability to cope with stress What is stress'1 Perhaps, stress is easier to describe than to define We all have an understanding of what stress is because we all experience it Stress is when you are running 10 minutes late and your 4-year-old spills milk all over himself Stress is when you have $200 worth of bills and $150 in the checking account. Stress is changing your— place of residence or losing a spouse In truth, while these examples relate to the circumstances when we feel stress, they are not stress Stress is not the circumstances in life but how you react to those events STRESS. IN itself! is not a bad thing It is neutral It is a basic ingredient of life Most of the productive.
creative things we do in life are motivated to some degree by stress. It is only, when we suffer too much stress at the wrong time that we are in trouble. Dr. Han Selye has observed that the short term stress response is beneficial, yet the long term response can be harmful. Stress causes the body to react to an outside stressor with the "Fight or Flight Response". Biochemically there is an adaptive reaction Adrenalin and other hormones have poured into the system, circulation is speeded up; more energy rich sugar is released into the blood; digestive processes shut down; blood clotting ability is enhanced; muscles tense and senses are sharpened. THE PROBLEM is that these same biochemical reactions occur within your body in response to a sharp word from your boss, an imagined slight. from_a~co- — worker, a-traffic jam and an argument with your spouse These things happened to us over and over all day. every day These responses while beneficial on a short term basis, can contribute to harmful diseases if repeated on a long term basis In an effort to help people deal with these problems, the Cape May County Health Department, along with the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Cape May County, is sponsoring "Eight Days to Resolving Stress" seminar to be held at the County Health Detriment beginning at 7 30p.m., Sept 10 and running through Sept 19 THE PROGRAM will be directed by the Depart ment's Senior Field Representative for Health Education and Pastor John Freedman The seminars will be dealing with the following topics: Stress. It Comes Only to the Living. Will Life Ever Return to Normal. Hearing What People are Really Saying, Is Your Job Killing or Fulfilling 11 When Life Hands you Lemons. Beyond Bandaids and Coping. In Search of Treasure, How to Change Enemies into Friends There is no fee for participation in the seminars. However, registration is limited If you would like to register for the seminar, please call Andrew Melchiorre at 465-7911. Extension #208
