DEAD ZONE (Paramount) "R" Canadian director David Crooenberg has proven himself several times to be one of the more adventurous and exciting directors presently work ing in the horror/fantasy/science fiction genres. Those with strong stomachs and the desire to be challenged by a demanding story , should check out Scanners and, especially, Vid eodrome. At his best, Cronen berg's . work takes on a surrealistic edge, not unlike the classic television series The Avengiq. I mention all .that, because Cronecjberg is a fine storyteller id his own right, but with Dead Zone he's adapted a best seller by Stephen King. The end result is a strong, entertaining feature. For those , of you who didn't read the book, its main character was involved in a traffrcgccident that left him in a coma for five years When he awoke, he discovered w had some ESP powers The movie deals with the problems facing this man, which finally result in an exciting ending The entire cast, especially Christopher Walken in the lead role and Martin Sheen as a sick, twisted politician, give commendable performances Still, one who has seen Crooenberg at his best will I New Voice Glib RIO GRANDE -r Meetings of the New Voice Club of Cape May Countywill resume Monday, Sept 10, 1984, af 7:30 P.M. in the Unit Office erf the Amen car Cancer Society, 15 Delsea Dr All laryngectomees and families are welcome
be skgbtly let down by Dead Zone His previous effort have all taken risks, but here he plays it safe, looking for his American breakthrough. Nevertheless Dead Zone is a well made film that's worth viewing. RECKLESS (MGM/UA) "R" Another teenage movie, but instead of going for the usual laughs. Reckless pits a boy from the wrong side of the tracks 'against his 'fellow classmates. To be perfectly blunt, the screenplay is fairly weak After all, how plausible is it that the ' main character would live in an unused section of his high school, be a football star, yet despised by his fellow teammates, and ends up having a love affair with a beautiful, popular, rich girP Yet, with all those drawbacks. I found myself being drawn into Reckless. Director James Foley has given the film an aura of tension One constantly feels as if something terrible is about to happen In the male lead, Aidan Quinn freely borrows from James Dean, yet pulls it off with plenty of style The female is played by this year's heart-throb (from Splash ) Daryll Hannah, who also does a fine job It's flawed but not a com plete washout CARTOON CLASSICS MICKEY MOUSE (Disney) "G" Perfect for kids of any age is this collection of Mickey Mouse shorts Starting with a brief history of Mickey and then the classic Steamboat Willie cartoon, these various episodes in the life of Mickey Mouse are a perfect example of stunn ing animation and durabili ty In all honesty, this is one of the most entertain ing videos currently available.
