Hayes on Major League Dream Team?

A couple of weeks ago white-watching the Kickoff /Classic for-eeH^e football, y I got to thinking] about the ranking systems so many fans follow throughout the season. In tjiat game Miami of Florida was ranked No. 3 in one poll and Auburn was top-ranked in quite a few polls. As you may already know. Auburn lost by two points and the shuffle was set into action. The Sporting News, a weekly sports publication, didn't even ' rank Auburn in the top 20. _ So I guess it is the only one which doesn't have to move Auburn out of the im- -* aginary No. 1 position. Hie rankings may net mean a lot, but they do make for great conversation when it comes to lacking a winner each week. Since everyone else gets into the action, I might as well pick my top 10 for the 1964 season IN THE TOP spot I like UCLA. It has a pretty easy schedule and an unknown quarterback named Steve Bono who may just be one

of the best in the college ranks. Number 2 will be Texas. The Longhorns seems to be able to Till positions with top players each year and this year will be no different. Running back Edwin Simmons, if he can stay healthy, will lead Texas to an undefeated season. Some say Simmons is in the same mold as Earl Campbell. Next comes Notre Dame. I have that funny Irish feeling about N.D. this year The Fighting Irish have to win one for the Gipper In this case the Gip happens to be Gerry Faust'. If Faust doesn't win in South Bend this time around, look for Howard Schnellenberger at the helm next year TRE REST OF the top 10 looks like this: Clemson No. 4, Ohio State at 5. Wildwood grad Bill Osbom's new team. Pittsburgh, No. 6. Rounding out the group are Miami 'at No. 7, Michigan No. 8, Arizona 9 and Washington 10. Some may ask why I don't have Penn State in

my fabulous 10. Well, I think the Lions' schedule will do them in. It's a tough one. Now let's move onVo the professional teams. I might as well go all the way over the "edge^ with predictions on the upcoming N.F.L. season. I like Miami in the American Conference. Dan Marino is one of the best and the Dolphins always find a way to win. Over in the National Conference, San Francisco is a good bet. . Teams to watch include ♦Jew England, Washington, and Dallas. If Gary Hegeboom can live through the pressure of being ' America's Team's quarterback, the Cowboys may be around come the third week of January A LONG TIME ago I made predictions on the baseball season and now is the time to look back and see how they worked out How about one out of four? The only team in the lead at this point is the San Diego Padres. 1 Also tabbed St. Louis in the National League ~ In the American circuit I took Baltimore and Chicago. Detroit put the rest of the East away in the first month and Chicago still has an outside chance in the West'. Kansas City could take that division before bowing to Detroit in the playoffs N Recently I read a story about dream teams in the major leagues I guess it

sort of would be the all star squad and here is my team if God let me put 10 players together to start my own franchise. I WOULD START the team with a shortstop and he would be Baltimore's Cal Ripken. Ripken can do it all and has 15 more years to do it. His double-play partner., would be Ryne Sandburg of Chicago at second base The other infielders would be Eddie Murray of Baltimore at first and George Brett of K.C. at third. (Mike Schmidt would be a great back-up. ) In the outfield, the easy pick is Dale Murphy of Atlanta in center. Murphyhas speed to go along- with his power and could hit in any spot in the order My right fielder would also be my leadoff hitter, Tony Gwynn. Gwynn, a real hit machine, would set the table for hitters in the middle of the order. Gwynn plays for San Diego The other outfield position is a tough one and a lot of people probably won't agree with me on this one I take Von Hayes of the Philadelphia Phils. Hayes is finally coming into his own and will be a great player for many seasons The catching duties will go to Lance Parrish of the Detroit Tigers He's a good receiver and a strong hitter Pitching"' Well, I'll just take the Orioles staff and work fr .m there REMARKS: Just around the corner are the high school sports season and pro hockey and basketball Soon, many kids will be

in action in a number of sports anil once again, as I do each year at this time, I urge everyone to get out and support high school athletics. I think it's very-

important for the kids and the money made goes- to keep such programs going To all the athletes , out there: Good luck over the next few months
